Have you ever given someone your heart? Only for them to chew it up and spit it back at your feet? If you have, perhaps you'll understand why I became what I am.

Lady Laurelle was found alone as an egg and brought to be raised by a powerful plague lord who had no heirs of his own, and when she came of age she was betrothed to Lord Ricon - the first and only son of a neighboring lordship. She had never met her betrothed, and understood that their union would likely be a loveless one, created only for power. However, when she finally did meet Ricon, she fell instantly in love with him. He was perfect, kind and handsome, and she found herself daydreaming of their future together constantly. They spent many happy days of courtship together, and when she looked into his eyes - she was sure he felt the same. Then came the night before their wedding. Under the gleaming full moon, Laurelle was sitting on her balcony and singing softly to herself, thinking of names for her future hatchlings, when she heard a noise below her. It was Ricon, climbing carefully up the ivy that decorated her wall. She squealed excitedly as he pulled himself over the edge, "Ricon! You romantic rascal, what are you doing here?". She smiled expectantly when he looked at her, thinking of how perfect he was and how sweet it was of him to visit her, oh how she couldn't wait to - "Laurelle, I'm running away" he said. "What? What do you mean?". She was perplexed, why was he running when they were about to have their happily ever after? He sighed, "I just can't stand it anymore, this future that has been planned out for me my entire life, decisions I never got to make, being forced to marry someone I didn't choose!" She flinched. "I'm sorry it took me so long to tell you, but I knew I couldn't leave you to the same fate. We want you to come with us, we can run away and once we are out of this place we can make our own destinies, and be with who we love." who we love? we?. "Us?" She asked, her voice cracking. "Yes" He answered, "I have someone I love very much, her name is Samisia. She is going to help us get out of here once and for all." Laurelle felt something break inside of her, and her vision began to blur. All she could say was "oh". "I'm sorry" Ricon said, "I have to go before anyone realizes I'm missing, but I'll be back when the moon sets. Meet us at the edge of the garden." He kissed her cheek, the same way that used to make her heart flutter and swoon, and then he was gone back down the wall and into the night. She went to bed.
That night, she dreamt of red. Mother was speaking to her in old tones, tongues of heartbreak and vengeance filling her mind, memories of ancient loss and rage. When she awoke, she knew what she must do.
Ricon and his peasant lover were caught before the moon had fully disappeared from the sky, and Laurelle was called in to observe the trial. The girl, Samisia was disappointing, she was nothing special really to look at and she didn't even cry when Ricons lord father declared that her punishment was to be execution. Ricon cried when the sword came down. She tried not to look at him. When it was all over, she felt relief, now things could go back to how they were supposed to be. But Ricon could not live without his love, he would not live without her, and Laurelle found herself a widow before she had even been a bride.
She went on to wed a lesser son of some far off king. He was a warrior, and he was brave and strong, but he could never hope to heal her heart. Still, it was nice she supposed that he was so devoted to her (at least, when he wasn't off trying to kill some imaginary monster) - and he would be a good and willing father, she knew. In exchange for these small pleasures, she has followed him on his "quest", and she will be a good lady and a good mother, for now.
