The Brave Blue Bee Written by FourLeaf |
"A wormy little guy who's obsessed with a fairytale about a Brave Blue Bee. That's... really all you gotta know here. Often forgets he's supposed to be leading research on Shadow's elemental magic and the Shadowbinder's Artifact."

"Brave Blue Bee flew away... bravely flew away, away..." A dark-colored Spiral darted after the insect, gracefully dodging the thorny tangles that stood in his way. "But, could it outsmart Alatar? The great... amazingly spectacular Alatar?"
The constant buzzing of the bee's wings shifted into a decrescendo as it landed on a flower, slowly fading to silence. Glowing purple eyes watched it ravenously from the shadows.
"What a brave, brave little bee," the dragon said. He wasn't talking to anyone in particular. Sometimes he just enjoyed the sound of his own voice. "It flies away, away — wait! Brave Blue Bee, wait for meeeeeeeee!"
A small, daisy-like flower was the bee's next choice. Bright eyes spied from the shadows as it crawled across the shimmering petals in search of sweet nectar. Then a buzz, and it flew away again... only to be immediately followed by the dragon. Scales and wings were lost in tangles of bramble as the Spiral looped after the bee.
"I thought hatchlings were taught not to play with their food."
The Spiral twisted through the air, barely avoiding the Guardian's leg. "I — well, yes. Yes, we are. Taught to not play with our food. But —"
"Let me guess," the larger dragon interrupted with a smirk, "you weren't planning to eat it?"
"Exactly!" Alatar grinned. "It wasn't just any bee, you know."
"Aw, don't tell me you're still going on with —"
"It was the Brave Blue Bee!"
"Al, you gotta stop this, hear? It's a nestmaiden's tale, nothing more."
"But —"
"Look, you've lost your entire family over this. You left your clan — and for what? A fairytale about a bee? And if I didn't pick you up thinking your wings were gemstones...."
"Alright, alright! Fine. If it will make you happy, I'll let the bee go."
"Thank you. Now, come with me. We've got clan business to attend." She turned and headed off into the wood, with the Spiral close behind.
Alatar paused for a moment, hearing a soft buzz. Where was that — ah, there! He could see it plain as day: the Brave Blue Bee, hovering over a flower. Almost as if it was looking at him... or rather, mocking him.
"I'll have you this time!" Alatar shouted, diving after the bee. He could hear his companion's angry hisses behind him, but he didn't care. He had to get that bee. "Away, away! After the Brave Blue Bee!"
The bee hovered between flowers, unaware of the danger it was in. Glowing purple eyes appeared next to the bee, watching it closely... and then dark talons shot out and grabbed the insect.
"Alatar," the Guardian rolled her eyes. "I can't believe you. I really can't."
"But i have it! And it's coming home with me! Besides, have you ever even heard the legend of the Brave Blue Bee?"
"Hm, yes. And I'm absolutely positive that the same bee that fought three rocs could be caught that easily. And by a noisy Spiral, of all things." She paused for a moment, looking at him. "Alatar, that's just a bee. It's not special."
"Let me refresh your memory then, huh?" He grinned at her. "The Brave Blue Bee was brave, so brave. It traveled a journey, journey through the skies, through the skies to the place where the great birds lie, where the great birds do lie...."
"Urrgh," the Guardian growled. She quickly picked up the pace, hoping to make it back to the den before she heard any more.
Alatar quickly darted after her, the blue bee in his talons, too busy reciting the legend of the Brave Blue Bee to notice anything. But if he had paused for just a moment and looked back, he would have seen a second blue bee, identical to the one in his talons, hovering between the shimmering flowers.
