The Clan of Burning Fantasies

A Founder of Stellar Wishes Lineage - Fallen Star Branch
. . . . frwind_left_sword_by_littlefiredragon-dbjxzll.png frwind_right_sword_by_littlefiredragon-dbjxzly.png

Background

Arcturus came to Clan Burning Fantasies with his father. While perhaps not one of the Temporal Rifters, Arcturus’s father garnered reverence through his association with Naomi. Whoever that was. Arcturus never felt the association was worth anything, being how removed he was. Instead, Arcturus wished to be known for his own merits. Which is why he began to work as Chrono’s assistant with zeal. It started out easy enough. Run errands. Record the words he heard. But then his mentor caught on to what he was writing. It wasn’t just what dragons were saying that Arcturus heard. He was recording their darker wishes. Intrigued, Chrono asked Arcturus to continue recording. It turned into a way for Clan Burning Fantasies to screen out their enemies.

This in turn made Arcturus and Horacio friends. The two were able to bond over their shared duties of protecting the clan. Equally so, Arcturus began to befriend the Skydancer Thayn. Because Thayn was also recording wishes for Chrono, the two viewed each other as co-workers. Soon enough, Arcturus felt that he made a comfortable lifestyle for himself. So he wished to have a family of his own.

It did not take long for that wish to be granted too.

I welcome Arcturus into this community Chrono is building. Although, I must say, I do not think Arcturus's arrival was an accident. My mother always taught me that the universe desires an equilibrium, which means that magic needs to have a flow. When the original wish granters disappeared, it saddens me to think they died out. They left a void. Which is where Arcturus and I come in. We manifest some of the magics of the original lineage. We are the universe's answer to Chrono's wish. His wish to not be alone.

Hubris

My preparations are complete. My target should be arriving any day now. Soon, my calculations will come to fruition.

Thespidaes smiled to himself as he sat at a sturdy writing desk in the Great Hall. One of the first things that he did this morning was use his authority as Morana's substitute to enact a law he slipped into the waiting pile a while back. Even now the ink of his sigil of approval had yet to dry on the parchment.

All of this perfectly crafted, months of studying her movements... Queen Firanira's beloved clan will pay us handsomely for her safe return.

Thespidaes produced a snort, too careful to truly laugh as he knew how readily laughter traveled in the frigid halls of the fortress.

There was a low cough from nearby. Thespidaes lifted his head to notice one of his soldiers standing nearby.

Thespidaes rumbled, "Speak."

The soldier, a sturdy Ridgeback covered in dark armor, rumbled, "Lord. The Skydancer you wanted us to keep watch for has been sighted inside Thanatos' church. Just as you said. Do we have your order to arrest her?"

Excitement surged through Thespidaes' veins. There was a reason why he was the tactician of this clan. His answer was crisp. "Proceed. She must be put to trial for breaking one of our laws."

"Yes sir," answered the soldier.

Now it was only a matter of time. Thespidaes busied himself with taking care of the remaining tasks he needed to complete before the trial. Eventually, noon approached and the members of the High Council trickled in.

Soon, soon. Oh Morana will be pleased with the pile of treasure we will get for this Queen's bail. Thespidaes lifted his head when he heard a rhythmic pounding on the door. It was the way that the soldiers announced their arrival to the herald.

Thespidaes barked at the herald, "Bring forth the accused!"

Heavy wooden doors thundered and creaked as the herald pulled the entrance open. Revealing to the gathered High Council who waited on the other side: Thespidaes' soldiers that escorted a radiant Skydancer with her forepaws bound in chains, two Gaolers that Thespidaes oddly did not recognize, and Thanatos of course. Thanatos quickly moved to join the other members of the High Council. The two Gaolers moved to the side somewhat but stayed relatively close to the Skydancer.

It was time for the show to begin. Let his plan unfurl and take flight! Thespidaes rose from where he sat at the writing desk and strode across the cold stone floor toward his prisoner. Even in this dreary place, he could see why she was hailed as a beauty. She held her head high, with her brilliant and shimmering wings fanned slightly outward in a proud air. Rich, shear fabrics adorned her wings and trailed about her head and shoulders. A thick belt buckle and an assortment of tail rings and bangles clinked to the rhythm of her march. It was truly a surprise, to see such golden radiance defy the austere air of the Great Hall. Thespidaes was a little jealous. After all, he was as golden as the sun! Thespidaes stopped a tail length or so away from his prisoner and waved away the soldiers with his left forepaw.

Thespidaes could never get enough of how his voice thundered through the great hall. "My Lords and Ladies of the High Council! I have summoned you here to bear witness to justice being conducted in the name of our glorious savior Morana! This Skydancer you see before us has committed a most heinous crime that threatens to unravel our clan! She has violated a law that I enacted as acting leader in Morana's stead."

A deep voice rumbled from one of the High Council members. "Which is?"

Thespidaes had to keep himself from smiling. This was going so smoothly, as expected. He answered, "This new law I enacted was in effort to protect us from attack via visiting dignitaries. All visiting dignitaries, such as Queens, are to come present themselves before the High Council to show good faith and good intentions to our clan. Those that do not are put to trial for displaying ill will!"

The Skydancer, Firanira, spoke up, "You are mistaken. I do not qualify for the bounds of this law. I am not a Queen, nor dignitary."

Thespidaes hissed, "Silence! The accused shall not speak over a High Council member!"

Firanira barked, “I am not a Queen!”

Thespidaes spat, “Lies to save your treacherous hide! You are the Queen Aequus’Regina Firanira of Sanguinem Luna! Mate to Arcyng Leo’Animus! The King of the Crystal Spire!”

Firanira continued her protest. “Yes, I am Aequus'Regina Firanira of Sanguinem Luna. However! Do not mock me, boy! I know you are trying to make me say something to incriminate myself in light of your corrupt law! My mate was overthrown! I was powerless to help him and still am! I do not know where you got your information from but... You. Are. Wrong! This trial is no more than an unjust farce! A sham! I am not a Queen nor dignitary!”

Thespidaes growled, “Of course you would say anything to get out of trouble!”

Thanatos barked, “Thespidaes! You go too far! This law was never passed by the High Council! This guest of mine you falsely charge is not a Queen! She has no authority in her clan!”

No, no, don't fight me on this Thanatos! Thespidaes wanted to toss the Priest out. He was going to ruin everything. His information could not be wrong! She was a Queen! She had to be! Nevertheless there was the echoes of doubt within his mind. His spies were strangely out of sorts when they were giving those reports a while back. Then of course there was the fact that he bypassed the High Council on this law he enacted. No, he could still salvage this. He needed to trap her.

Thespidaes barked, “Ha! You speak so passionately to defend your mate. Perhaps worthy of the loyal reputation your name carries!”

Firanira hissed, “What?”

Thespidaes could taste it in the air. Her fury. He was wearing down her defenses. He could salvage this! “I speak of loyalty! Faithfulness! You are known for your faithfulness to your mate! However you are also known for your loyalty to your clan! So why have you come to see Thanatos three times in this past month alone?”

Firanira growled, “I was seeking counsel from a friend! What kind of dreadful clan forbids friendship?!”

Thespidaes scoffed. “Your actions speak to the contrary! Members of this clan have seen you spend tremendous amounts of time with the Priest. Much more than mere friendship would dictate. No... you’ve lost all loyalty to your mate...“

Firanira was surprisingly nimble despite her forepaws being bound. She leapt forward and her bound forepaws struck Thespidaes square in the snout. The impact made Thespidaes flinch and stumble back, shaking his head.

Firanira’s eyes burned with an internal fire and her lips were drawn back. There was a depth to her snarling tone that made Thespidaes second guess himself further. That sound she produced was not the tone of a dragon. Firanira snarled, “You mocked me once, never do it again! I will not tolerate anyone besmirching the bond Arcyng and I share! You have no ground to stand on!”

Thespidaes felt a rush of superiority that made his chest swell. Now he had her. His lips curled into a small smirk before he schooled his expression into one of fury. He whipped around to face the rest of the High Council. He pointed a slender clawed finger at Firanira. “You see this? She dare lay a claw upon a member of this High Council! There is your proof! She is hostile to this clan!”

Thanatos’ voice spoke up, “Thespidaes, you goaded her into striking you. We all saw it. Have you no shame?”

A low murmur rose from the other Council Members. Thespidaes wanted to clap that meddlesome Priest in irons. He glared balefully at the Priest.

Firanira’s words echoed crisp in the grand hall. “I challenge your unjust charge against me. I demand that this farce is settled in combat! My son shall champion me, seeing as I am old and bound.”

Her bound forepaws lifted to indicate the snowy white male Gaoler with a crimson mane. His pace was steady as he approached from the side of the hall on heavy paws.

Thespidaes was quietly assessing the male Gaoler. The furball was smaller but definitely built solid. There was a strange odor of iron in the air that Thespidaes recognized. Was this girl making fun of him?

The male Gaoler’s deep voice rumbled across the entire hall. “What is the matter? Too much of a coward to answer?”

Something in the back of Thespidaes' mind was warning him to back out. He couldn't stop looking at that male Gaoler's eyes. The anger. Whatever. The furball wanted to fight? Thespidaes survived war and murdered his own as a sacrifice to Morana. What was a single Gaoler?

Thespidaes spat, "I accept your challenge and will fight your champion! Terms?"

Firanira answered, "I win, and you drop the charge on me with no strings attached. Acknowledging that you are entirely in the wrong. As witnessed by this clan’s High Council."

Thespidaes scoffed. "Oh please. I will win and your clan will pay your bail. Which I promise will be considerable."

The male Gaoler grunted. "Pig."

Thespidaes walked several paces away from the male Gaoler. He turned around and barked, "I would know your name, Gaoler!"

The answering rumble created an odd chill of familiarity in Thespidaes' spine. "Audens'Cor Ladarius."

Why does that sound familiar, wondered Thespidaes. His eyes narrowed as he studied his fluffy opponent. That furball was already bleeding, Thespidaes saw it in Audens’Cor Ladarius’ crimson mane. Thespidaes rolled his shoulders and hummed. He felt the familiar surge of his shadow magic as he summoned extra shadow hands.

This Gaoler pup will be easy.

Audens’Cor Ladarius began his charge. He kicked up dust from the stone floor and bowed his head slightly so that his antlers were on full display.

The fool.

Thespidaes was ready. His shadow hands flexed, ready to catch the charging Gaoler by his antlers. He felt secure in his footing and confident that this fight would be over soon. His nerves started to grow again though when he heard low rumbling from the Gaoler. What is that language? It sounded almost like one of the Priest’s chants.

Wait... No!

Thespidaes tried to move but it was too late. There was a brilliant flash from the Gaoler’s violet eyes. Thespidaes could only raise his forepaws to grab those vicious antlers, his shadow hands gone. Purged like a vile smell. What kind of monster was he up against?

He did not get the opportunity to think for long. His forepaws found no purchase on the antlers, deflected by a barrier. The impact knocked the wind out of Thespidaes’ lungs and as he struggled on the cold stone ground, he realized that his forelegs were as unresponsive as dead fish. He roared when the antlers struck his chest and punctured his scales.

Following the motion of his charge, Audens’Cor Ladarius flipped forward and twisted over Thespidaes’ flapping wings. There was no time for Thespidaes to react. Audens’Cor Ladarius lashed out with a series of blunt blows with his forepaws and landed successive hits on Thespidaes’ wings. Horror filled Thespidaes’ chest and panic lent strength to his twisting core. His forelegs and wings were disabled within the first five minutes of this duel! His shadows were not responsive!

Thespidaes tried to wiggle away like a worm. The cold floor was unsympathetic as he struggled to move. He yowled when pain erupted from his right hind leg. He tried to hit his adversary with his tail but he only succeeded in striking those horrible antlers. He felt his body slide backward.

Icewarden’s Blizzard! What is this beast?!

His head was slammed onto the stone floor by a heavy forepaw. Thespidaes could not utter a single word. He felt fur brush over him and he could hear a soft breath as his adversary drew near.

The deep voice of Ladarius was as calm and dark as a deep lake. “Perhaps you would know my name given by the Elder Gaolers. I was named Tyr when I annihilated a Horrorbeast in my Order trials. I am trained as... a... sentinel...”

Thespidaes struggled to hold back his whimper. He knew that name, it was from one of those reports that he usually throws away. A Gaoler with a crimson mane, not of the Ice Flight, but with battle prowess as fear invoking as a blood stained moon. That report said that he was invited to join the Sentinels but elected to join the Seekers instead.

Thespidaes' lips struggled to form the words. "Tyr... Bloodmoon..."

Thespidaes felt his face was getting wet from Ladarius’ savage claws that dug into his snout. He had no idea if it was his tears or his blood. It may have been both.

Ladarius’ voice was laced with disgust. “You do not speak worm...! You... you disgusting worm... you tried to use my mother to extort treasure from my clan? I should tear you apart, just like how I ripped that Horrorbeast limb from limb...”

Suddenly, the soft voice of Firanira commanded the grand hall. “Ladarius... you’ve done enough Sweetheart. You’re better than him.”

Thespidaes hated it that a whimper escaped his throat. He laid on the floor, glaring balefully at the back of Ladarius’ head. If he had known more about the furball he wouldn’t have lost like that!

Thespidaes spat, “I’m not finished! You’re nothing more than a paltry Seeker!”

Ladarius turned his head. The fire in the Gaoler’s eyes made fear arise inside Thespidaes anew. “Check your hubris. I am a Seeker by choice.”

Thespidaes’ body trembled and agony from his wounds set in. “Priest! Do something!”

Thanatos responded softly. “I will take care of Thespidaes. Please, oh by the Icewarden please do not let this tarnish our friendship Lady Firanira, Sir Ladarius, Lady Leanne. May I make you some tea inside my church? You are my guests...”

“I think it is best that I go home with my children,” said Firanira, “I am admittedly rattled from being so viciously attacked by one of your clan. When as you say, I was a guest and Pilgrim paying respect to the Icewarden.”

Thanatos bowed his head. “I am SO sorry! Please! Safe travels!”

The trio left without another word. Thespidaes watched Thanatos turn toward him.

Thanatos snarled, “You will have to explain yourself to Morana when she gets back!”

Thespidaes only had one thought, I miscalculated.
