Biography

"...Boreas is waiting for you."

Somewhere in the Southern Icefield...

Howling winds knifed through the night, warning dragon and creature alike to seek refuge. A mighty fortress on the southernmost isle stood tall, as if challenging the storm. Waves crashed against icy rock, as if reaching to answer.

If one might listen beyond the storm...

...they may hear the screams within the walls...

...

Keepers strode down the halls of this fortress, passing each cell. Mad laughter erupted from many of the prisoners, others only rambled to themselves or wept uncontrollably. These prisoners are soul-searchers.

One of the guards raced down one of the main halls, purpose fueling his strides. He reached one of the senior Keepers patrolling the larger cells, passing on a message to her.

“Greer, King Boreas wants to see you,” he rumbled.

The senior Keeper, Greer, acknowledged his message with a curt nod, and he took her post by the cells. The she-Gaoler ignored the voices of the prisoners as she strode past, her eyes only for where she needed to go.

When she reached Boreas' chambers, she was greeted by the sight of the huge Imperial draped in his robes, poised imposingly on his throne. Another dragon sat by his side, the Pearlcatcher Aurora, her pale eyes sparkling with adoration for him, though her pearl was nowhere to be seen.

“You summoned for me,” Greer said, halting before him.

Boreas slowly rose, stalking closer to Greer as she remained standing where she was. His icy gaze pierced hers, and she lifted her head proudly, undeterred by his towering stature.

“Has Gallagher brought you any news yet?” he probed, circling her.

Greer bristled when she spoke. “No. He hasn't spoken to me since he vanished.” It was the same answer every moon. Every night for the past few years, she had attempted to reach Gallagher's thoughts with her own, but he would not respond. Boreas gave her many chances since then to pass on any information from her mate, but the Imperial's patience wore thin every time she didn't have an answer for him.

Boreas sighed and rubbed his temples with two sharp claws. “You know I hate to be disappointed, don't you? Especially when it involves the whereabouts of a certain, and might I add, dangerous criminal. Of course you know of whom I speak?” he prompted.

“Dewlap,” Greer snarled the name. “Soul-searchers are Shade-touched monsters that must be locked away,” she recited.

“Except...he didn't stay locked away, did he? And neither did that rainbow Wildclaw, the one that somehow escaped just days before Gallagher vanished. Curious, is it not?”

Greer bristled again. “Gallagher would not have released either of—”

“And how might you explain his disappearance? And he has not been reporting to you since.”

Greer was now silent. She did not have an answer for him this time, either. She didn't know why her mate wasn't responding to her thoughts, but she knew he wasn't dead, and that he couldn't have been the one to free any of the prisoners.

“My love,” Aurora spoke up, her voice soft, “I should like to see my pearl, now.”

“It's safer in the royal vault, my dear,” Boreas purred, and he started back towards his throne.

“Of course,” Aurora said, smiling up to him.

“I assume that you would want me to track Gallagher down then?” Greer called after Boreas.

“Of course not,” the Imperial said, sweeping aside his robes as he took his seat. “I can't have you running off on me as well. You may resume your post,” he dismissed her. But as she turned to leave, he added, “But, I want you to pass on a new message to Gallagher, one he won't hesitate to answer to...

“If he fails to bring me Dewlap within the next moon...

“I'll hunt him down and kill him myself.”
