Biography

Birthplace:

She was as cold and as still as a stone. The rocks surrounding her motionless form would have hidden her from anyone passing by if it hadn’t have been for her brightly colored scales. Soon after her sudden appearance near the Cairnstone Rest, she was approached by several curious dragons.

“The poor girl must’ve been looking for a place to lay herself to rest.”

“Such a tragedy...”

“Should we move her the rest of the way? She’ll attract vultures out here.”

The appearance of a Mirror clad in black feathers silenced the crowd’s murmuring. A large Guardian, painted a striking blue-green, followed behind her. The Guardian sighed heavily, his pale green eyes searching the unfortunate Imperial's face. Before he could speak, the Mirror spat, “What a mess.”

“Izilth, please have a little respect,” the Guardian pleaded, lowering his head so that his eyes were level with hers. “This dragon is clearly recently deceased.”

Sighing, Izilth replied, “I know, Athyg. I’m sorry.” Her attention shifted to the gaping entrance to the Cairnstone Rest. “This requires a proper burial at once.” She glanced over her shoulder and snorted. “Where’s a Ridgeback when you need one?”

Hesitating, the dragons gathered there prepared to push the Imperial’s sizable body into the sacred burial ground. Just as they drew closer, she suddenly stirred. The other dragons scurried backwards, startled by her dull white eyes. They seemed to stare into their very souls, judging all they found there.

The Imperial stood and staggered forward, her limbs trembling and unsteady. Her once bright green scales had dulled in places to a pale orange. Most shockingly, her wings appeared to have been badly infected by an unknown disease, littered here and there with boils and festering wounds. She smiled, revealing blackened and rotten fangs. “Are you… friends?” she asked, her voice a wheezing, almost incomprehensible growl.

The other dragons made a hasty retreat to a safe distance, except for Izilth, who stared defiantly into the Imperial’s eyes. Athyg crept forward and tried to pull her back with him, but she shot him a glare that told him to back off. “What brought you to our lands?” Izilth snarled. “Who do you think you are?”

A confused expression flashed across the Imperial’s face. “I… was called… Dawn,” she said. “I came here… to… find refuge.” She shook her head, trying to piece her memories together. “They… threw me… into the Wyrmwound… to get revenge.”

“Revenge?” Athyg asked, inching forward again. “What for?”

Dawn shook her head again. “I… do not… recall,” she admitted. “But I can’t… go back. The Southern Icefield… is no longer… my home.” She squeezed her eyes shut as a sudden tremor ran through her entire body. “Even… if I... wanted, I am... too sick to return.”

“Is that why you collapsed?” Athyg questioned, edging even closer. “It’s a long way here from the Wyrmwound.”

“Yes,” Dawn answered, grinning again. “I had… to travel on foot.” She spread her wings slightly. “It hurts… too much to… fly.”

Athyg turned to Izilth, an expectant gleam in his eyes. “We can’t have her in the clan,” Izilth retorted. “This disease of hers might be contagious. We should just leave her to her fate here.” She stood and began heading back to the clan lair. “Come on, all of you. We have more important things to attend to.”

“Wait!” Dawn cried, staggering after the group. “Please… my condition… is not contagious. But it also… cannot be healed. I have walked… alongside others… and they received nothing… from me.” She stumbled and fell, sending up a cloud of dust. “Please… I do not… want to die alone.”

Stepping in front of his mate, Athyg stopped and murmured, “Izzy, she has nowhere else to go. Don’t you remember how that feels?”

Izilth growled under her breath. “Fine,” she replied, her expression difficult to read under her mask. She turned to Dawn and said “You may return to the lair with us, on the one condition that you keep your nest apart from the others. I do not want to risk a plague running rampant through my clan.”

Dawn picked herself up out of the dirt and smiled. “You will not… regret this,” she said. “I will… do my best… to make myself useful.”

“Come along, then,” Izilth commanded, stepping around Athyg, “Before I change my mind.”
