Memento Mori
Generation 2

button_by_cas_a_fras-dclednr.png

Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

Perhaps Danger had been a fitting name, for a dragon that seemed to go it's whole life perpetually finding it. Danger never seemed to be able to resist the allure of one more taunt, one more trick, one more fight... until it was too late

He remembered being a hatchling, picking fights with his clanmates' familiars that could be over twice his size. The young spiral was always snatched away by a disapproving parent before the animal could do much damage.

He remembered playing pranks on visiting dragons, sometimes harmless, sometimes malicious, running them in circles till they couldn't see straight.

He remembered joining his clan's party of warriors early on, desperate to reap benefits for his clan and praise for himself.

He remembered that night...
Battered and exhausted, the three of them. He, Viatora, and Saurella, against an unprecedented horde of kamaitachis. Saurella was already passed out, the shimmering coatl wheezing on the ground, barely awake. Viatora, the illustrious clan leader, looked on the verge of joining him on the ground.

"It's time to retreat," the warrioress panted, weakly casting the spell to return Saurella to the lair. "There's no point to keep on-"

"Retreat?!" Danger hissed, prideful even in his battered state. "And let the beastclans laugh at us for the next decade-"

"Danger! We've had enough. It's time to go." Viatora's eyes flashed.

Danger rolled his eyes, facing the approaching beast with a smirk.
"I'll be the judge of that." He said confidently, before roaring back into battle.

Health was low. He didn't know how many times he had been hit, too many to count. Adrenaline was the only thing keeping him off the ground. Just a few more, and he would be victorious-

He saw the flash of metal, before he even heard the blade unsheathed. The scythe shone in the light, just a moment, before arcing down, down, going through air, then flesh, blood, and finally bone.

Danger didn't see anything after that.

He was in a misty place. He felt strange, lighter than air, his battle wounds gone. His stomach lurched, no, it couldn't be.

He looked around to see he wasn't alone. A single kelpie stood, hair tangled in weeds, eyes glittering with alien intelligence.

"Am I dead?" He croaked at the beast.

The kelpie stared blankly back. "Yes." It said emotionlessly.

Danger looked terrified. "But...I can't be! I have so much still to do! I have a mate, hatchlings, waiting for me..."

The kelpie tilted its head. "What would you do to live again?"

Danger looked it in the eyes, and felt a pressing feeling that he must choose his next words wisely. But Danger was never one for thinking before doing.

"Anything." He wheezed.

Just like that, the misty place disappeared. He was on the dusty battleground, alone. But alive.
