The fungus krept in slowly. At first nobody paid mind - most shadow dragons are taught mycology from a young age, hatchlings are warned about edible and poisonous mushrooms. Many kept small gardens to feed themselves and their families. Perhaps that is what made their tragedy so insidious - they were destroyed by something so familiar, something they saw as their own.

The first symptom was a change in attitude, which often meant becoming a mirror image of what you used to be. Outgoing dragons became recluses, friendly dragons became irritable and hostile, some dragons fell into a depression. They hid in dark, damp places, among other fungi.

The second symptom was a growth. At first it looked like a tumor, a bump near the skin. Then it swelled and started leaking fluids. Then it burst, releasing spores. At that point the dragon could not be saved anymore, the infection had spread all throughout their body and was ready to leave to find a new host.

Elsa was among the few who were immune to the fungus. She and her family left their clan in the Grove, to look for a new home, but the fungus followed everywhere. Like a plague, it was always two steps further, many clans were claimed by the disease, very few dragons wanted to take them in, believing the clan to be an omen of end times.

The only solution was to pick up a sword and protect their own piece of land. Elsa learned the art of swordfighting from her father and she helped him patrol the outskirts of their new clan territory. It was in dangerous territory - near to hostile beastclans and known for Emperor activity. Raids and skirmishes were a common occurence, and sometimes Elsa could swear the fungus would still follow them, as the clan suffered several years of ruined crops and food shortage. Elsa saw her parent's eyes become hollow, their bodies grew weak. She knew that soon she would be left alone in the world.

One day her parents didn't come out of their little tent and Elsa knew what to do - she set fire to her home and watched it burn. She turned around and never looked back.
