Magellan's assistant in all things Shade-related. Niel hails from the Starfall Isles, coming from a long line of dragons known as Starseers. These dragons gradually develop starlight-like patterns across their body as they age, slowly becoming colder and detached from the world - both mentally and literally! However, ever since he was a yearling, Niel has feared his time and ran away from his destiny, calling it a disease, and sought doctors who might fix him. One experiment caused the magic in his body to spurt out, and now the "starlight" on his body leaks from him, looking like glittery clear glue. At least it isn't progressing any more...


It started at his wingtips.

Each dot was unmistakeable. They were the first shimmers of starlight, glittering under the moon. By day, they were nearly impossible to see, but at night, they shined with such brilliance that it was difficult to look upon them directly. And the veins that bore red across his leathery skin became more defined, more visible, more...

More starlight.

Niel grimaced as the days passed him by. He visited doctor after doctor for this condition. Many examined him for basic signs of illness: fever, exhaustion, irregularities, and all let him off with a degree of perfect health. But it did little to assauge his fear, as blots of stars lit up nightly, clear across his wings. By then, the skin was starting to crack and turn translucent, and no matter how many times his parents comforted him, such an answer was not one Niel would accept.

He began to visit specialists who promised more exact answers. Professionals with more dubious methods. If the coin was good, they would do anything. And so, they examined him with delight and cold curiosity. Their claws roughly grabbed his wingarms, stretched his wings out, and pricked and plucked at the crystalline veins that stretched with his skin. But no matter what they did, they could find no answers.

It was time to turn to another source.

One daring scientist brought forth from their Arcane homeland a cauldron of pure, liquified magic. As the cauldron was wheeled up to Niel, a sudden yearning, lusting, burning desire swept over him. It was overpowering, and compelled him into the vat. But - no, he can't. Not the stars. He couldn't stand the stars. Not on his body, not in his sky. He turned to leave, but the claws he entrusted his body to would not have it.

One snagged his tail. Another pinned down his wings. He paid them to fix him; let them do their jobs. He squawked, and the door he planned to dash through slammed shut - an assistant closed it. The acquisition of knowledge will make this all worth his while, they cooed. Relax, dear patient... close your eyes. It will be over soon.

And so Niel's consciousness began to slip, and his last thoughts were of the sky above.

Niel's eyes snapped back open. His vision was encompassed with light, and for a moment, all he could see were stars. Stars. Gods forsaken stars. They clung to his vision, fuzzing the edges of his sight and hiding everything else behind them. Stars, stars, horrible disgusting stars! They were going to eat his soul at this rate, and he would become nothing but a starseer!

No, never, not if he had anything to say about it.

He dragged his long, slender neck up and off the ground, then glanced around him while the stars still held his sight. Beyond the blaring buzz in his ears and his unfocused vision, he could see surrounding him... white cloth- no, coats, and shattered glass. An overturned cauldron not too far away.

What was any of this? What ghastly sight laid before him? Before he could be haunted any more by the visions before him, he turned tail and ran, stumbling away from the lab on shaky, wobbly legs... trailing behind him shiny, shimmery liquid magic.
