Spiral to Fae 22/07/2020

Glowbug Juice- while is there is great debate on if the drink is actually made of Glowbugs, the drink itself does glow in the dark!

Blue Honeycomb Mead- a blue colored mead made of honey from Coral Carpenters, served super chilled to keep it from hardening

Blackberry Wine- often the cause of many a hangover at the Circus

Superberry Fizz- a magically irresistible fizzy drink that turns one mouth purple and can lead to hyperactivity in hatchies (and Spirals)

Moor Thistle Coffee- native to the Tangled Wood, the seeds of these thistles are roasted and served like coffee after the Circus. Useful for those who have a long flight back home and need to say awake. Often served with a complimentary Peppermint candy for those with stomach aches after all the rich food.

A good bartender does not list the ingredients of a drink when she makes it. Lest it ruin the fun!

Mariela was not born crying like most hatchlings, weakly searching for their parents' warmth. Most hatchlings were unable to regulate their own body temperature as such a young age. No. Rather, she was born growling, baring sharp little teeth and nipping at her father's paw when he extended it too close to her face. Too close for comfort for the tiny Spiral.

He, thankfully, did not make the same mistake twice. Mariela found she did not have to remind him again after the first time. She only had to click her teeth in his general direction once after that. She glared at him for the rest of the night behind the safety of her broken eggshell, not wanting him or any of her siblings to get too close.

It soon became obvious that Mariela had a... fascination with things a normal hatchling shouldn't. Mixing drinks for the bar at the inn became her passion, talent, and pastime. Even at her tender age, she had learned so many skills from the resident Innkeeper. Should a hatchling her age be working behind the bar? No one dared question her. She's smart, they'll give her that, but there's something dangerous behind her eyes.

Well, no matter. It's better for her if everyone stays away, Mariela thinks in the back of her mind. Because she is very dangerous.

And one day, it will show.

The tavern was as busy as ever that night. Some foolish drunkard had promised the rest of the room that the next round was on him, and the slightly less-drunk patrons were taking advantage of the bet. Brianna had stepped off the mic for a quick drink herself, and Mariela wondered which poor sap was taking his chances tonight. Certainly, she had amassed a crowd at her little table. A spiral took his chances at the free microphone, adding his off-key voice to the cacophony of the night.
An empty mug thudded down in front of her.

“And what issh the laydie having tonight?” A wildclaw, managing to look in three directions with two eyes slurred over the dregs of his drink. Mariela winked at him, before taking his glass and filling it up with beer. She licked the edge of the foam, then gently put it in front of him. He raised it to her, near spilling it, then disappeared back into the crowd. Two more dragons took his place. A pearlcatcher, and a tundra. Mariela had never seen the tundra before, though she recognised the pearl. She had often hung around the swamp, looking for something on the premise of ‘cleaning up’. It had made other residents very wary.

“…As I was saying, there’s rumours of an ancient mass of caves down near where Stench keeps her bodies.” The tundra was deep in conversation, waving her flagon around.

“I tell you, there’s nothing there! Sludge and the others have already looked, and while I distrust them on a normal day, if they had found anything you would have heard about it by now!” The pearlcatcher noticed Mariela listening in, and discreetly pulled her hood over her eyes.

The tundra finished the rest of the drink and waved it in Mariela’s face. “Barkeep, if you will. Cally, blackberry wine for you?”

The pearlcatcher waved a hand dismissively, which the tundra misread. She nodded at Mariela, and two filled glasses slid their way.

The tundra pushed the glass over to Calamity. “Sludge is the size of an overladen barge, and about as flexible. No, these caves are small and winding. I’ve told you before that coatls used to inhabit the caves, so you need someone of coatl size.”

The pearlcatcher laughed, a sharp bark. “Have you seen the amount of coatls we have in our Tribe, sister? There’s only two left, and both are completely useless.” Mariela knew who they were talking about. Fawn, proficient thief, the only female member of the Swamp Boys, and the only coatl to survive the plague. Anything she touched was a good as gone. She didn’t have a favourite drink, but she could drink any drake under the table. Stephanie was the other, though her crippling coffee addiction tainted any drink Mariela made her. She was the secretary of a shade-touched creature, Mariela guessed, which meant she was not to be trusted with anything. Her artful ability to dodge any direct questioning was a penalising factor.

The tundra threw back her drink, gasping at the sting. “So don’t use a coatl. Spirals dig, right?” She stared pointedly at Mariela, who had appeared with a dirty washcloth. The spiral held her hands up innocently and grabbed the empty glass when the tundra turned away.

“Why are you still looking for this, NightWish? I thought the trail had hit a dead end when you questioned Ambrosia?”

The tundra shook her head firmly. “No, that trail went cold, but Ambrosia mentioned you have caves here. What confuses me is why everyone keeps saying coatls…?”

Mariela chose that time to butt in. Wiping the glass, she leaned on the bench and cleared her throat.

“I’m surprised you didn’t know, Miss Tundra.” She winked and pulled back slightly. “The coatls were wiped out a few years back from a food poisoning incident. To call it the plague is not entirely correct. Before that, there were plenty of coatls, living right here. I heard that the food poisoning was caused by some mushroom spores.”

She learned in closer, and lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “I heard, from a certain guardian, that there was a coatl that grew those spores, and he lived in these caves, and when he left, his mushrooms grew out of control and killed all the coatls that were left. I heard he was practising with parasitic mushrooms.”

The tundra and the pearlcatcher hung onto her every word. When Mariela paused to spit in the glass and rub it, they waited for her to continue. Finally, when she stayed silent, the tundra growled in frustration and dug in her purse. One gold coin then two. Mariela laid her washcloth over the coins, and when she moved it back, they were gone. “Who told you this?” The tundra asked.

Mariela chuckled. “A good bartender does not list the ingredients of a drink when she makes it. Lest it ruin the fun!” With that, she glanced to her left, where another was eavesdropping. A red wildclaw with a murderous gaze slowly sipped her drink. “Well, where are the caves?” asked the pearlcatcher.

The barkeep leaned back. “Who’s asking? Perhaps there’s something in it for me?”

The pearlcatcher glanced left and right. “NightWish here thinks that-” she started, before she was hurriedly shushed by the tundra. The pearlcatcher glared at her, before continuing. “NightWish thinks that one of her clan’s refugees was a coatl that worked here. We found a name in a book in the library that matches his, but it says he left a long time ago, and the caves have since been closed. NightWish wants to find a specific mushroom-” She was interrupted again.

“Not just any mushroom! The parasitic mushroom that the barkeep just mentioned! I knew we were on the right track!”

“No, NightWish! She only stated that there was a coatl with parasitic mushrooms, which matches the book! It does not link that dragon to Mars at all! You said you had a dragon who changed bodies, but it all sounds entirely coincidental to me!”
Mariela was intrigued by the pearlcatcher’s argument.

“Changed bodies? Mars? Oh, please tell me more.” The glass and washcloth lay on the bar, completely forgotten about. Mariela noted the sudden lull in music. There were more ears listening than just hers.

The pearlcatcher drew her glass closer, staring into its depths. “Mars is a pearlcatcher in NightWish’s clan who grows deadly mushrooms. NightWish told me that she overheard her friend’s mother talking about an old strain of parasitic mushrooms that he used to grow. He has the same name as a black coatl, but he’s a bright blue pearlcatcher. I thought he was my first proof that dragons born here can change their bodies like donning a shirt.”

The sounds of the tavern were drowned out by a loud whooshing noise between Mariela’s ears. She shook her head to rid the noise, but it stuck around, like a persistent cricket. The pearlcatcher was incredibly close, which meant she was a dangerous target. By the looks of some of the attention she had attracted, Mariela wondered how long until someone decided they needed to shut her up. She laughed at the irony of the situation. Despite how smart the pair thought they were, they somehow had let Cynnfor, the bearer of the Tribe’s biggest secret, slip out from under their noses.

She noticed the pair had turned their attention on her. She must have laughed out loud. “Well,” she started, raising the empty glass. The washcloth dropped out of it onto the bar. Please send Mars my regards, I haven’t heard from him in a while.”

The tundra stood up and placed her hands on the table. “You know Mars?!”

The spiral tapped her nose and winked, before melting away. The bar was suddenly busy again, with patrons yelling out for the barkeep. The tundra slumped, dejected. She had been so close. Calamity buzzed with excitement and was the first to leave the bar. The tundra was next, but not before trying to bribe a drunken spiral to do some digging for her. After a crude reference to her genitalia, she quickly followed the pearlcatcher, while trying to hide her red face. After a while, the red wildclaw peeled away from the bar, gently stroking her cleaver. She too, disappeared into the night.

And finally, smooth enough that Mariela almost missed it, she watched Iphis finish his drink and disappear after the trio, leaving a gleaming tip in his wake.

So he was involved in this too.

There would be some lovely rumours flowing through her bar next week.

ETYMOLOGY - Latin form of Mary, which is derived from the Hebrew Miryām, a name of debated meaning. Many believe it to mean “sea of bitterness” or “sea of sorrow.” However, some sources cite the alternative definitions of “rebellion,” “wished-for child,” and “mistress or lady of the sea.” The name is borne in the Bible by the mother of Jesus, the son of God.
