Originally part of a Plague clan named Atramentous Mien, he was one of three survivors of an incursion that destroyed the once large, powerful clan. The attack came from nowhere, caught the whole clan off guard, and resulted in catastrophe. Everything was destroyed, yet they were able to save the clan's treasure from the attackers and escape completely unscathed. When the others ask them about their experience or for war stories, the trio grow somber and shake their heads, telling the others there was nothing to learn from the massacre.

Taphos has a powerful memory. He is an architect by nature, preferring stone to flesh, but can hold a grudge for years. The only dragons he shows any affection for are Drexelius, Penumbra, and HAL, the A.I. He is not a great fighter, or even a good one, but makes up for it through strategy. He will often let Drexelius jump between him and a fight. In return, he will keep Drex from leaping before he looks. He and Drex keep particularly close, acting more like one dragon with two bodies. They are very protective of Penumbra.
