Originally part of a Plague clan named Atramentous Mien, she was one of three survivors of an incursion that destroyed the once large, powerful clan. The attack came from nowhere, caught the whole clan off guard, and resulted in catastrophe. Everything was destroyed, yet they were able to save the clan's treasure from the attackers and escape completely unscathed. When the others ask them about their experience or for war stories, the trio grow somber and shake their heads, telling the others there was nothing to learn from the massacre.

Though the trio are not often seen apart, more comfortable keeping each other company, Penumbra lives apart from the boys. She is a quiet dragon, mostly keeping to herself. Despite her startling appearance, she is graceful and delicate, though her bones click sometimes when she moves, an unsettling sound in the dark when you don't know she is nearby. She is an observer, taking note of anything that happens around her without comment or action. This has gotten her in trouble in the past, based on the fearful reaction she has when she is caught now. Taphos and Drexelius are very protective of her.
