______Melody was an interesting dragon. The story of her finding even more interesting, as recent as it was. It was shortly after the plague that had plagued (haha) the clan named Lightfall. It was rather brutal, though no dragons died, but it took its toll on them. Coming right around Riot of Rot, the disease spread throughout the clan and the surrounding areas. It came to the point where Lanea (the founder of the Lightfall) needed to go further outside of her clan territory to get fresh (and safe for consumption) herbs. Completely alone, Lanea heard the distinct sounds of someone chewing on branches, and went to investigate. Brushing aside tree limb and tunneling through dense brush, soon enough she found the source of the noises. And that’s how she found Melody. It was almost ironic, considering Lanea found her in a pile of sweetmint, almost crushing the tiny leaves with her soft body. Her body being a dark grey, making the soft pink of her wings stand out as she followed Lanea on bumbling child legs. As she came to the clan, something about her changed. Dots of light began to float around her, bumping into her at some points as they glowed a bright orange. Fyreflies, Melody had been chosen. Melody was a bouncing baby coatl, and everything seemed normal for the first...five days. On the sixth day, people began to worry. Though she was cute as a button and soft as could be, the fact she stayed a baby was worrying people. While the clan wasn’t sheltered (they knew of something called permababies), they did know that it didn’t happen for no reason at all. Lanea put her best scholars to work, having them figure out exactly why this child wouldn’t grow up. Secretly though, she was happy. After all, this is a forever hatchling, someone she could always care for and tell stories to. Even still, she had people figure out the why of the matter. It was the principal of the thing and she couldn’t deal with the idea of having something be unresolved. It was hard to communicate with the Coatl, considering their ways of speech boiled down to different intoned hums and coos, while her own faeish made her voice rather monotone. Luckily though, a bogsneak called Iunari was available to help. Becoming a translator between Fae and Coalt, Iunari became fast friends with both the founder of her home clan, and the newest member. It seemed that (through virtue of being around both Iunari and Lanea from when her brain first started being able to hold memories), Melody’s comfort level with both of them came from exposure rather than a love of communication. Beyond communicating with the two (who she called her ‘mama’s’ no matter how many times Lanea gently told her that they both had different mates), Melody didn’t seem to really want to reach out to anyone else in the clan. Even Cascade and Reiko (the mates of Lanea and Iunari respectively) couldn’t exactly break through the child’s (though calling her that became harder and harder as the days passed) assumed coldness. In truth though, it wasn’t that the Coatl didn’t like either of them, it was that she couldn’t figure out how to talk to them comfortably. And though neither of them were mean or scary, there was still the barrier of uncomfort that stopped Melody from talking to them aside from one or two word answers.
______There was no real answer to the scholar’s questioning. There was no apparent reason behind Melody’s permanent youth. Of course, they tried everything. Tried to test out everything they could figure out. Testing out the sweetmint patch she had been found on (nothing, it was merely delicious). Testing out her feathers (after all she had a knack of tugging them out) and getting back nothing but the standard deviation for Coatl feathers. Then they turned to testing (as safely as the scientists could) out on Melody herself. Trying different potions and brews (the top three scientists of the clan were in charge of making them to keep it all safe), trying to see if there was anything biological stopping her from maturing (there wasn’t) Even boons of maturity wouldn’t make her body regain it’s lost time. After a full year of trying, the scientists gave up. There was no reason in trying to work past an unmovable, unsolvable question when their efforts could be better focused on something that could be solved. So they told Lanea (terrifyingly in unison), that it would be up to her to focus on getting everyone used to Melody and getting Melody used to the clan. It was discovered through Lanea’s efforts to slowly get Melody talking to more people, that her Fyreflys serve another purpose rather than just marking Melody as a Coatl with an alluring magical aura. They’re semi sentient and can encourage Melody using voices that are soft enough that only she can really hear. Encouraging her to reach out to other people. While she’s still uncomfortable with being forced into conversations she doesn’t want, she’s also very good at flapping her wings and getting away from the conversation so she can relax. Lanea was ever so happy when she found out that Melody was getting better at conversing with other dragons, and she wanted to give her a gift: a simple flower lei that she had found in her travels. Of course, Melody loved it. Until she flapped her wings to fly a bit up and it fell down the entirety of her body and dropped on the floor. With or without the flower lei, Melody has found her forever home that loves her enough for her to be comfortable.
