Personality
Chanter is old, that much is clear. He’s seen almost all of his children leave, go off and join new clans, have children of their own. Chanter is a grandfather in every sense of the word, from the cats that hang around him for his almost fire clan-like warmth to the generations of children he’s spawned. A grandfather in his life, and a grandfather in his actions. Almost definitely the oldest in his current clan, he takes the role of a paternal role. (Not a leading father figure though, he was done with leading.) Though he comes from Lightning, he adores to hang in tall trees, lounging in the sun and soaking up all the warm rays. He’s softly patronizing, not condescending, but fatherly. More like grandfatherly. He talks like he knows more than you (considering his age he most likely does), but it always comes from a good place. A kind place. Chanter excels at not letting his past get him down, even though there is a good amount that would bring down a weaker dragon.

Biography
Chanter had lived a long time, 45 years to be exact (and truly, it is almost exact).Very long time for a coatl, truly for any dragon (except for the Gods Above, who know no matter of age), but he was fine with it. Fine with it in the sense it didn’t exactly bother him, but whenever he saw something that reminded him of Lyle, it was a little less fine. Of course, he lived on, became a grandfather and a great-grandfather and on and on until he could barely count the new dragons as relatives. But he did still, to everyone, even those who shared no ancestry with him. They were all his family now, even as his children go off to serve different deities and rulers. Even as he gets sent home tokens for his children’s service. Worthless tokens of lives worth so much more.

The life he once had is gone now, but that’s okay with him. Honestly, in his youth he used to be much more volatile than he is in his old age. He even had enemies, once upon a time. Laughable to think of now, but it was true. Chanter had a horrible long standing feud with a guardian named Oblivion, but that (and Oblivion himself) are laid to rest in a pit with two bodies. One a very good thing, and one that still hurts to think about. His enemy and his husband.

He’s no longer near Lyle, no longer near Oblivion. And that’s a mixed bag of two intrinsically related things. One of loss and sadness, and one of relief (respectively of course). It was 34 years that Chanter had lived, 22 of those years had been lived without Lyle, and now there was a decade without him as well. On the 34th year, a fight finally broke out between Chanter and Oblivion. Biting words and fangs, claws and weapons. It was brutal, and the only reason Chanter didn’t lose the battle and his life was thanks to Lyle, thanks to his stupidly selfless and caring husband. Oblivion and Lyle both died that day, and with it, died all of Chanter’s unwillingness to change.

For the next decade, Chanter would force himself to learn to forget grudges. To let go of old hurts and find it in himself to forgive those he could still. He traveled the domains, from Lightning to Fire to Arcane and everywhere else. Eventually, he settled down into a lovely nature clan named Kombi. There it was where Chanter truly became the very embodiment of grandfatherhood.

First came the cobalt glasses, perched on the end of his nose. Chanter had been having trouble seeing for a while (combination of both his age and a blizzard in the Southern Icefield). So he fished it out of the apparel hoard and put them on. It wasn’t until he looked at himself in the mirror that he realized just why everyone burst into chuckles when they saw him.

The cap and the scarf came together, on a chilly day during the Crystalline Gala. Snow was dusting the top of the tree tops, and there was a brisk wind. So, to keep warm, he wrapped a scarf around his neck and put a cap on. Throughout the day, as he fluttered around the clan, making sure everyone was safe and warm, he had collected a good few faes nestling into his scarf. He let them stay there, curling up around them to keep the tinier dragons warm.

The final nail in the coffin came when he found himself at a river with some young dragons (both hatched and recently transferred). Teaching them how to fish (he learned in his two years in the Sea of A Thousand Currants), and he let the word “Whippersnappers” come out. Not only was it incredibly old fashioned of him, but the two young snappers were very confused.
