Grouse Basilisk Field Notes
Before they want out one day, Aldith and Summer asked Incandescence to watch their hatchling, Pixel. Incandescence, in the middle of reading a thrilling book, had asked Aurum if he could watch Pixel instead. Aurum, having already made plans with Majolica, asked Glimmer to watch Pixel. Glimmer, being in the process of carefully touching up an old portrait, asked Phantasmagoria to watch Pixel. Phantasmagoria, being preoccupied with studying a new alchemical recipe, thought, “how hard can watching one hatchling be?”, and agreed to take Pixel.

So, Phantasmagoria set Pixel up beside him with some illustrated books. Lizbet’s Library wasn’t well stocked in books written for hatchlings, but he figured books with pretty pictures would be engaging enough for a young hatchling. He picked out things like history books with illustrated battles, and botany books full of colourful flowers.

That settled, he went back to studying alchemy.

The books did engage Pixel for a while; she admired the colourful flowers, tracing over the patterns with a fore claw. She imagined stories to go with the illustrated battles. But, she had a much shorter attention span than Phantasmagoria. Pixel was very quickly bored.

So, she wandered off to find something else to do.

Phantasmagoria, preoccupied with a discrepancy he’d found in this record of his recipe, as opposed to what he’d read in another text, did not notice.

In her wandering, Pixel found a shelf full of shiny, colourful, enchanted scrolls, which Lizbet had really been meaning to find a more secure home for. Some of them even glowed. Pixel was entranced.

She wasn’t very good at flying yet; only able to get a metre or two above the ground, for a few seconds at a time. This was just enough for her to reach a particularly enticing glowing pink scroll. She tried to grab it, but knocked herself, then the scroll off balance. Pixel tumbled down, the scroll not far behind. She thudded to the floor. The scroll thudded down on her head, then bounced down to the floor, where it unrolled before her.

Satisfied he understood where the discrepancy in his recipe came from, Phantasmagoria looked up from his books. Only to find the hatchling he was supposed to be watching had vanished. In a panic, he jumped up, and abandoning his books, he scoured the Library. Pixel can’t have gone far, right?

She hadn’t gone far. She was sitting by the shelf of enchanted scrolls Lizbet had really been meaning to find a more secure home for, playing with a glowing pink scroll. Phantasmagoria breathed a sigh of relief.

The relief was short-lived. An even greater wave of panic rapidly overcame him, when he realised Pixel was playing with a scroll of eternal youth. He snatched up the scroll, and stashed it away on a high shelf.
The scroll might not have taken effect. Sure, Lizbet said those scrolls were unstable, and not to touch them, but there was no proof Pixel was eternally youthful, right? Everything was…

Oh Arcanist, who was he kidding, everything was not fine. How was he going to break the news to Aldith and Summer that their daughter might, perhaps, possibly have lost the ability to age?

Pixel, being too young to comprehend losing the ability to age, was more upset at having her shiny toy taken away.
