Biography
–Phantasmagoria–
|
While browsing the shelves of Lizbet’s Library, Phantasmagoria found something that was halfway a book, halfway a flowerpot. It was far and away the most intriguing thing he’d seen. Reading the book—which was much more difficult than reading your average book, on account of it being half flowerpot—Phantasmagoria found it was filled with alchemical formulae detailing the transformation of one inanimate object into another. This was fascinating, but largely incomprehensible. The pages were full of notations he couldn’t begin to understand. Phantasmagoria wanted to understand. He went through the other alchemy books in the Library, looking for those that were easier to read, both in terms of the simplicity of their content, and of being entirely book-shaped, rather than half flowerpot. Many of them had suspicious, yet delightfully colourful stains across the pages. One looked suspiciously as if it were bound in dragon hide. A few of them, thank the Arcanist, contained detailed tables explaining alchemical notation. But, Phantasmagoria quickly realised, there was only so far reading theory could take him. He decided to try some alchemy for himself. So, right there among the stacks of alchemy books, he set up a bubbling cauldron over an open flame. When Lizbet found out, she immediately doused the fire, and threw the cauldron out of her Library. She then dedicated an afternoon to yelling incoherently at Phantasmagoria. Eventually, Lizbet calmed down enough to explain that she didn’t have a problem with him practising alchemy; it was the open flame among her collection of very flammable books that was the issue. The next day, she and Ariel helped Phantasmagoria find a well ventilated room in the Castle, where he could safely set up an alchemy lab. Finally, Phantasmagoria got to experiment. There were a few… messy results. He added several of his own suspicious, yet delightfully colourful stains to his alchemy books. And to his lab's floor, and walls. And ceiling. He did, though, successfully change the pattern on his wings. His most successful experiment, in Phantasmagoria’s opinion, was the one in which his leftover residue gained sentience. He named it Squish. Squish made for great company while Phantasmagoria tinkered away in his lab. Never mind that he hadn’t actually been trying to grant sentience to leftover residue. Phantasmagoria also successfully completed the process of turning that one book into a flowerpot.
