Windsinger Oracle

Breeze is aptly named.
With her sweet spirit and gentle manners, she brings delight to Dandelion Clan—and also great pride, for she is a skillful aeromancer.

Dragons who meet her while she is exercising her abilities will understand this immediately and may even be intimidated by her, for once Breeze is absorbed in her magic, she can come across as aloof.

Normally, however, she is as playful and sunny as she looks, and is always ready to lend a comforting ear to any dragons needing the Windsinger’s guidance.

Backstory

That Breeze should be a great aeromancer was obvious when she was born. She was a lone egg, and so there was much anticipation surrounding her birth.
Anticipation erupted into excitement when she hatched and then opened her eyes. Like all Wind dragons, she had light, yellow-green eyes. Unlike most Wind dragons, however, her eyes were completely pupilless. But they weren’t blank or emotionless: Magic shimmered within them, moving like swirling clouds.

Breeze’s parents, Tuber and Acacia, had heard stories of Primal eyes. Still, they had never imagined that such eyes would appear in one of their own children. “Is she all right?” asked Acacia. She was half-curled around her daughter, shielding her protectively.

“She is more than ‘all right’. She is blessed!”

The strong, clear voice belonged to Arwen, the clan matriarch. Acacia pulled back one of her wings, and Breeze found herself looking up into Arwen’s face. The Skydancer smiled back warmly, her face alight with joy.

“These eyes are the Windsinger’s mark,” explained Arwen, “and they show that your child is destined for greatness. Powerful magic will awaken within her—but Wind magic can be contrary if not harnessed right. Your daughter will require thorough training.”

Acacia and Tuber pressed close together. Tuber queried, “Will she be taken away?”

“Not at all. She will have a place in our clan, and I will see to her training myself. And in fact,” Arwen’s smile became just a bit impish, “you and Acacia may want to sit in on the training sessions. You may learn a thing or two about Wind magic yourselves.”

As Arwen had promised, Breeze grew up in the clan. Most of her waking hours were devoted to the study and practice of sorcery. Wind magic by its very nature is a turbulent thing, and Breeze’s studies were filled with struggle as much as with excitement and joy. Fortunately, Arwen was a capable mentor and herself a great aeromancer.

Much of Breeze’s magic was tied to prophecy and guidance. She would sometimes receive visions of the future. These glimpses were as unpredictable as the wind itself, almost impossible to harness. Both she and Arwen tried many techniques that would enable her to focus, that she might understand the prophetic visions. They tried using scrying bowls, mirrors, feathers, runes....

It was incense that gave the best results. When Breeze inhaled the aromatic fumes, her body and mind relaxed. She could receive visions more easily and focus on them more precisely. It was difficult to talk to her while she was in this entranced state. Only once the vision had passed would Breeze’s eyes open, and then she would be ready to speak with other dragons.

As a Skydancer, Arwen was gifted with ambient awareness. This is not normally found in other breeds, but Breeze, from a young age, seemed able to pick up on others’ emotions...even their thoughts. Arwen nurtured this sixth sense alongside the Spiral’s prophetic skills. When no visions came, Breeze would turn her mind outward instead. She would be able to sense others’ emotions, lift ideas from their minds....In time, she was able to recognize other dragons even with her eyes closed, for she could identify them by the color and shape of their thoughts alone.

So many things to learn, so many lessons and labors...This is not to say that Breeze’s life was all work and no play, however. Arwen was a kindhearted teacher, and she wasn’t above granting her pupil extra free time. There were many activities to enjoy in Dandelion Clan, and Breeze tried them all.

Her partner-in-crime was another Spiral, a mischievous courier named Wave. The two of them enjoyed hearing stories from other dragons, racing around the lair, or just talking together. Wave was fascinated by Breeze’s lessons and often asked about them; in turn, she shared her own tales of faraway lands.

Despite her mischief, Wave was a true friend. Her encouragement meant a lot to Breeze, for despite the warmth of her mentor and her family, she knew she had many responsibilities ahead. It wasn’t enough just to look at visions and to know what others were thinking. She had to put the guidance of Wind itself into words others could understand.

Wave allowed her friend to fasten the chimes around her neck. They jangled merrily, and she chortled, “These are so much quieter than my bells. They’re better for sneaking up on other people with!”

The two of them laughed. Wave was notorious for sneaking up on people so she could play pranks on them. It was why various clanmates had given her a cape—complete with oversized bells so that they’d hear her approaching. It wasn’t always effective, though.

“I’ve mostly been making chimes to help me with my visions. They help me relax,” Breeze explained. She looked as though she could use some relaxation now. Wave recalled why, and she rested her head sympathetically against Breeze’s neck.

Breeze was now nearing the end of her studies. She would not be leaving the clan, but Arwen had explained, “Just because your studies are over does not mean you will stop learning. Wind is ever changing, ever evolving—and so too must you be. Your mind must remain open, and you must always be prepared to master new ideas...”

Wave’s voice interrupted her thoughts: “Have you met the Windsinger already?”

“I haven’t had the good fortune to meet our god,” Breeze sighed. Not many dragons had, to be honest. The Windsinger had apparently not yet completed his journey.

But the visions, the magic—all were signs that he hadn’t abandoned his children. She had learned this from Arwen too. This, and so much more—

“It is not enough for you to be a great aeromancer.” Arwen shrugged. “Why, any dragon can learn aeromancy, given enough time. But to be a great leader, and a bridge between dragonkind and the gods—that takes great fortitude and skill. And having taught you, Breeze, having raised you and mentored you from your earliest days, I’m confident that you are equal to the task.”

It was an awesome responsibility, and Breeze, of course, felt nervous. But as Arwen placed firm paws on her shoulders, strength flowed between them. The Spiral now felt less afraid—she regarded her future with excitement and determination instead.

Bravely venturing into the unknown, as befitted a scion of the Wind Flight. Arwen smiled. “Now you are ready.”

Nowadays...

There is a den in Dandelion Clan that is big enough for the largest Imperial. Its size is only to accommodate visitors, however, for its lone occupant is Breeze. This is where she receives dragons who need the Windsinger’s guidance—for often the future is obscured in mist, and the songs left by the god are difficult to hear....

“Come. Sit,” Breeze tells her guests, and they relax before her hearth. They may drink tea or eat with her; almost everyone talks, telling her of matters they need guidance with, of what they want to do next or why they wish to serve the Windsinger. Breeze always listens sympathetically. Their paths are very different, but in them, too, she sees much of who she used to be: nervous and unsure about the future, but still eager to learn and do their best, to meet challenges head-on.

As each dragon speaks, she has a vision. The visions are still difficult to control, but Breeze’s prophetic eyes are sharper now, and her mind remains open. She gathers information, imparts it to her guest , and the way ahead becomes clear.

The vision fades as the incense sticks burn down; the clouds of smoke dissipate to reveal Breeze’s face. Her eyes are still as full of magic as they were when she first hatched—and now, looking upon exaltees, they brim with kindness and compassion.

“Go in good fortune, exalted one,” she blesses them, and the dragon, comforted at last, spreads their wings.

Breeze always watches them leave. She watches until they are so far away that even her prophetic eyes can’t see them. Then she returns to her den; if she has free time, she may craft more chimes for herself or as good-luck charms to others. Each of her chimes has a unique voice, and whenever she hears it, she remembers each dragon she sent away.

A chime, a face, a memory. A vision and a prayer. Her thoughts dwell briefly on the past—and then again, the future comes.
