Biography

Crystallyne

Mage of the Veredia Lake
Crystallyne was born in the center of Dragonhome to two archeologists. Due to their dedication to their occupation, she had a lonely childhood, spending more time with neighbours than her own family. Although she attended school - her parents wanted her to follow in their footsteps and receive a good education - she was disinterested in her studies, often sneaking away to the library to read fairytales instead. The stories of magic and mystery spoke of wonderful places lying outside of Earth territory, where mages got together to defend all of Sornieth.

When she was finally old enough to fend for herself, she packed her few belongings and left Dragonhome without saying goodbye. She had set her sights on a covent of mages at the Thorndark Alter in the Tangled Wood, and despite their initial hesitance to accept a non-shadow apprentice, they soon discovered Crystallyne's unusual gift - being able to forsee the future.

She spent several years with the covent before learning the group did not hold the same morals as her. As she aged she concluded that she was only valued for her prophetic abilities, which were being used for political gain by the Shadow flight. But when she politely refused to use her powers, stating her reasoning, the covent reacted furiously, stripping her of her belongings and exiling her to the hostile, unoccupied land between the Tangled Woods and Viridian Labyrinth - a death sentence.

But the shadow dragons had not anticipated the dragon's resourcefulness; against all odds and with the help of her powers, Crystallyne managed to survive in the dark forest, eventually finding her way to a crystal clear lake that reflected the starry night like a mirror. This enhanced her powers, allowing her to see further into the future with more clarity than ever.

Crystallyne lived within Salainen territory decades before the kingdom was founded. At first, she was happy to help Apollo and the other travellers learn the history of the forest and the magical powers it held - her knowledge of the area and its secrets were expansive. They showed an interest in her gifts, using her prophecies to thrive in the notoriously harsh environment.

However, there was one disaster that Crystallyne did not predict. Apollo soon took advantage of her charity; the information she had given him made him decide the forest would be a perfect permanent residence for his clan. Around her lake, he built the first settlement of the greater Salainen, Veradeen.

The mage did not approve of his usage of sacred land, foreseeing a future of great turmoil and unrest. But despite her warnings, the Salainen continued to expand across the Shadow-Nature border, leaving a trail of despair in its wake. Eventually, Apollo left for the kingdom's new capital, leaving Veradeen under the young noble, Lady Porphyra's, control.

Ever since Apollo's betrayal, Crystallyne refused to use her powers for The Salainen's benefit despite being the most powerful mage in the kingdom. The Garrison also came to recruit her, but to no avail; they were just as corrupt as their monarchy. She once again lives a life of solitude on the small island in the Veradeen lake, her only visitors being the occasional Veradeen resident offering food or gifts from the mainland - but her distrust in others runs too deep to repair.
