The legend of Samtaeseong narrates the origin of the Triplets Stars constellation (Orion), located northeast of Bukduchilseong (Seven Stars of the Northern Dipper, Ursa Major).

A long time ago, by the swamps of Heungnyongdam (Black Dragon Lake), there lived triplets who had been born after the death of their father. They each set out in search of mentors and returned after ten years of academic and talent development. Then one day wild winds blew with roaring rain, and the sun disappeared. The triplets consulted their teacher and learned that a pair of male and female black dragons from Heungnyongdam were engaged in violence in the heavens, and the end the female dragon swallowed the sun and soared up to the edge of the sky, the male dragon following her. The triplets took on the black dragons and succeeded in making the female dragon throw up the sun, which brought back light to the human world. They were able to kill only one black dragon, however, and the other one survived, returning to Heungnyongdam. The triplets ascended to the sky to guard the sun against the surviving dragon, and became Samtaeseong (Triplets Stars).
