Tell me, we both matter, don’t we?

Ruth has no memory of her parents-she's fairly certain she killed them as a hatchling. For as long as she could remember, her touch warranted instant death-the ice magic she drowned in daily froze anyone who touched her to their core. Her earliest memory is of wandering the southern shifting expanse, hungry and afraid. She begged food off strangers for a time, until a curious engineer named Sharpshooter took her in. He was entranced by the magic that seemed to be limitless coming from the fae, and devised a machine that created electricity by utilizing the extra elemental magic. His machine powered most of the southern shifting expanse, though few knew the secret as to how it was so successful. Ruth willingly submitted herself to the machine, as it drained enough of her magic to allow her contact with others. A novel thing, Ruth became quite the cuddlebug. But Ruth was still far from well. Her vision was failing, and her engineer caretaker was horrified to discover that her eyes were slowly freezing. In a desperate bid to save her sight, Sharpshooter drained nearly all of Ruth's magic with the machine. He very nearly killed her that night. Ruth slipped into a two-month coma, and when she awoke, she was blind. Her eyes had frozen completely while she slept, and the dead tissue had fallen from her face. When Sharpshooter decided to leave the city, Ruth would not be left behind, though Sharpshooter was drowning in the guilt of what he had done. Ruth wouldn’t have it though, and they left together. The two were heading north, towards the Sunbeam Ruins, when Sharpshooter ran into an old flame of his. Vela, a good friend from Sharpshooter’s days in engineering school and the one who had built and designed his mechanical lungs, was a part of a small group of ambassadors from the clan Vela had gone to live with. Though Ruth had never met her, she and Vela quickly hit it off. But it was what Sway, the head diplomat, had to say that made both Sharpshooter and Ruth decide to join the clan of the deep woods. There were two dragons like Ruth in her clan-a pearlcatcher who’s empty eye sockets dribbled shadow magic, growing gnarled trees and fungus in her wake wherever she went, and a spiral with earth magic so strong and out of control she could not stand on ground where the dead were buried, for fear of accidentally resurrecting them as an earth acolyte. Ruth rushed to this new clan to meet the dragons who were like her. Bunny and Sky took to Ruth quickly, but they were surprised to find that her magic had had such a destructive effect on those around her. Bunny’s magic made things grow out of ground that hadn’t seen life in centuries, and Sky could resurrect the dead. The two also were able to set up a meeting between another pair of dragons whose overabundance of magic had warped their faces. Real and Fractal were crew members of a pirate ship belonging to Captain Liberty, who was a friend of Starlight’s. Ruth was entranced by Real, another blind fae. Real’s life experience was the opposite of Ruth’s-as an ice dragon, Ruth’s accidental killing of those who touched her before Sharpshooter’s intervention was seen as evil and wrong-but Real, as a plague dragon, had never been able to kill much of anything until he learned to hone his magic. Real also had an extremely effective outlet for his magic, which was the defense of the Nerida. Ruth decided to stay with the clan permanently, and Sharpshooter made the long trek back to the Shifting Expanse to retrieve his machine-without it, Ruth would turn lethal and untouchable again. Though he never drains so much of her magic to put her life in danger again, Ruth uses the device every day. It leaves her weak and drained, but she is not a risk to anyone else, and that is what matters to her. Her magic, and that contributed whenever another overly magical dragon decides to give the device a try, is the sole source of electricity for the deep woods clan. |
