Sharpshooter was born and raised in the big cities of the shifting expanse, and since he was a hatchling he knew he wanted to be an engineer. He attended engineering school in the city he grew up in and graduated with honors. He had only been in the professional world a few months when someone flung boiling plague magic in his face. Though Sharpshooter managed to avoid inhaling most of it, some of the magic still entered his lungs. He never did find out what part of his life his attacker took offense to-he never saw them again. His legs were infected and badly burned, and they had to be amputated to save his life. His lungs were partially salvaged. Several of his friends from engineering school, most notably Vela, began working on a way to save his life. Vela designed cybernetic lungs that replaced his mangled ones, allowing him to breath independently, and wake up enough to make sense of what had happened. With Vela's help, Sharpshooter built himself a pair of mechanical legs. With his body forever changed but under his control again, Sharpshooter picked up where he left off-working on energy management.
For many years, Sharpshooter worked diligently on creating an ideal power source for the cities of the shifting expanse. He created a generator that ran off the magic inside of living dragons. This was the closest to an ideal power source he could create, but realizing that using living creatures to generate power was a slippery slope to murder, Sharpshooter shut down the generator and hid it from everyone. He turned his attention to other methods of power generation.
After a few minor successes with wind turbines, Sharpshooter wondered if there was truly no ideal way to power the masses. Depressed, he ceased work on efficient energy for a while, and started spending time teaching at the school instead. It was during this time that he first saw her. She was tiny and scared, could barely speak the common tongue, and shrieked and fled whenever he tried to speak to her. Eventually he managed to corner her behind the playground, trying to calm her and tell her he meant no harm. The tiny fae would only tell him “Go away. I’m danger.”
After a few days of bringing her food, Sharpshooter was able to work out her name-Ruth-and that any living thing she touched was instantly frozen dead. She had been born with too much ice magic in her tiny frame, and she had no control over it. Brilliant lights went off in Sharpshooter’s mind, and he asked if she would be willing to try something that he thought might help her. With nothing left to lose, and growing to trust the cyborg who had been feeding her, Ruth agreed. Sharpshooter drug his machine of terror, the one that converted magic to electricity, out of his basement. He started slowly, taking only a little bit, and as he watched the icy film over her eyes receded. He tentatively touched a claw to her face, and both were shocked when he did not freeze.
For several years, Ruth lived with Sharpshooter, and his machine was set up to power a vast amount of the southern Shifting Expanse. No one really knew where most of the power was coming from, but Sharpshooter was widely trusted, and no one questioned him. For a while, everything was fine. Then Ruth told her guardian that she was starting to lose her sight. After a quick inspection, followed by frantic call to a healer friend, they were able to confirm that even with the machine taking magic from her every day, Ruth’s eyes were slowly freezing. Terrified that she would go blind, Sharpshooter pushed the machine farther than he ever had, trying to take as much magic as he could. It very nearly killed her. Aghast with himself, Sharpshooter put Ruth in the care of his healer friend. His adopted child had fallen into a coma, and her eyes were still freezing. Eventually the healer pronounced the tissue completely dead, her sight gone, and to prevent infection he surgically removed what was left of her eyes. A month later, Ruth woke up. Sharpshooter was still full of self-hate and regret for what he had done, and tried to convince her she would be better off without him. Ruth refuted all his claims, reminding him that he had always acted in what he felt was her best interest. Still, Sharpshooter refused to use the machine commercially again, and quit his work completely. He tried to leave in the night, but Ruth heard and followed him. As they traveled north, eventually Sharpshooter happened to bump into Vela. The brash guardian who had saved his life was thrilled to meet Ruth, and even more thrilled to tell Sharpshooter about the small clan she was living in now. He learned that there were other dragons like Ruth-not the same, but with similar overabundances of magic. Ruth wanted to join their clan, but she wouldn’t go anywhere without Sharpshooter, so eventually he agreed. He had wanted to leave the Shifting Expanse anyway.

Name: Sharpshooter

Picture of self:

Personality Traits: I'm very dedicated! Once I put my mind to something I'm not going to let it go until I see the thing finished. I'm also very inventive and I love solving problems, since I'm good at finding new angles to work from. I've been told that I'm extremely stubborn, mostly by my daughter, and my best friend Vela says I can be self-righteous and hypocritically idealistic. I suppose I might be a bit self-important too? I know I'm good at what I do and I can do things well, but I don't know if that makes me a narcissist.

Likes: I like making things more than anything else, really. I'm a big fan of all kinds of metalwork and I've secretly wanted to be a jeweler, but my skills just aren't in that area-I'm better at making bigger things. I'm also really into efficiency, I prefer that things are working as best as they possibly can.

Dislikes: I don't like open windows, they let in drafts and honestly kind of scare me a little bit. I'm also not a fan of really bright lights, they hurt my eyes. Very young children also stress me, especially if they are in my workshop-they could get hurt! It's not that I don't like children, I just worry about their safety.

Extra info that is important to know: When I was in university a stranger threw plague magic in my face and some of it got into my lungs. My best friend Vela designed mechanical lungs for me, which means my breathing sounds very strange but I have amazing stamina! I never run out of breath. My legs were also badly burned and had to be amputated, which resulted in my mechanical legs that I designed myself. My eyes are also kind of sensitive, so I usually wear tinted goggles unless it's night.

What is your job?: I'm an engineer. My main focus is electricity efficiency.

Have you ever had a serious relationship before coming on the show?: No. I've always been very focused on my work, until I adopted my daughter Ruth I only had one person I would even call a friend.

What do you care about the most in the world?: I want everyone to be safe and have at least the bare minimum of things necessary for comfort provided to them. I also want to make sure all lines of ethics are not crossed.

What are you obsessed with?: Electricity, probably. Or efficiency.

Biggest fear?: Hurting someone, especially someone I love.

What is the best thing that ever happened to you?: Adopting my daughter Ruth. She's just as stubborn as I am, and I needed someone in my life to make sure I don't turn into a complete recluse.

The worst?: Probably the time I very nearly killed Ruth by accident. I would say it was even worse than having molted plague magic thrown in my face. I was trying to help her, but I was rushing and I was not careful, and I am eternally thankful she was not harmed by my negligence.

What is the one word you would use to describe yourself?: Determined

One word strangers would use to describe you?: Intelligent

One word your friends would use to describe you?: Stubborn

What would your outfit be for the Opening Ceremony?: Most of what I wear is necessary for my survival, but I could throw on a couple fancy things
