Growing up, my mother was my everything. She was a warrior, giving her allegiance to no single deity, no single cause, but to the world, to every dragon she could help in some way. She fought only for the cause of bringing greater joy to the denizens of this world. She shined in my eyes, a hero beyond epic proportions. She was righteous fury incarnate, and I worshipped her.Every trial cuts in deeper, The pain, dark ebony But I draw a little closer to a truer me. ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ I suppose I never really outgrew that, but I like to think I’m a little more realistic about it now. My mother was not perfect. She was not some fantastic creature who could do no wrong. But she was a good woman, and that’s a rare, wondrous thing. In my eyes, that’s pretty close to a miracle. I aspire to be as good a woman as my mother someday. Well. I say aspire, but I mean strive. I strive to emulate her in every way I can, walking her path as well and as close as I am able. As I work through countless drills to train myself in the use of a new weapon or another combat technique, I feel my mother looking over my shoulder and smiling. As I come home weary and battered and nearly broken from a fight for a righteous cause, I feel closer to her than at any other time. It is the work that brings me closer to her, and I would not have it any other way. To aspire is to dream of something, but that is weak. To strive is to reach out and grasp your goal with claws extended, and that is worthy. In my striving to be like my mother, I have yet to find my own path, but that’s alright. If I follow her road all my life, I can still die satisfied that I have done well. Her way is a hard one to follow, full of pain and sacrifice, but also full of righteous joy and the knowledge that one has brought more goodness to the world. I will walk my mother’s road until I find my own, and as I do so I can hear her voice in my thoughts, urging me on. I follow that voice, follow it as it guides me through life, follow it into battle and goodness and light.
