Chestnut wasn't brought into the world in the way most creatures are. He wasn't even brought into the world most spirits are - rather, he was created from a fragment of an older, more powerful being and nurtured into consciousness by hand. As one of the eldest of the clan members, Chestnut takes on a nurturing and protective attitude, at least when compared to the habits of the other more carefree tanuki. He considers himself the caretaker of the pups, and they love him whether they outwardly agree with that or not.

Raised to love and be loved, Chestnut often causes flowers to bloom when he is most happy, or when he thinks it will make others happy. He's one of the few creatures that can actively create life, unlike most tanuki, who can merely give the impression of new life until their magic trick fades, but unlike them Chestnut cannot necessarily control his boundless creative energy.
