Biography
Cip
That unbearably cool drake every hatchling looks up to and wants to be. (The first time he heard that he laughed so hard he almost choked.) Tanner, who takes on the job of slicing into dead meat, peeling its hide off, scraping clean and curing the hide and then going through the nasty process of turning the hide into quality leather, which he does without a flinch. Works well away from the lair even with the effort of always curling winds away to sea and never shows up without reeking of lye, which every dragon that understands his work appreciates given the alternative. For his part he claims to have burnt out his nostrils years ago so none of it ever bothers him. As near as anyone can prove, never freaks out over anything, even things worth freaking out like half-curdled warm milk or roller coasters. A stupid dare: thoughtful hum, slow smile, "Why not." A dangerous dare: judgy antenna, "Don't think so," even when the darer tries to provoke. An actual snakebite: prompt, calm treatment and instructions for the panicky other fledglings, and no told-you-so or stupid-hatchie for the bitten just "Now you know." Unusually well-educated; can carry a share of conversation about almost any topic and do so knowledgeably and with interest. The wild-drake mane and vest he wears are part advertising, part comfortable, and part funny to surprise people. Closest friend since fledging is Killroy, who makes time to drop by whenever she's in the area on the Windsinger's business. Very rarely sees either of their daughters since both chose to follow in Killroy's flight path and are usually out-Plateau, but keeps in touch via semifrequent letters. Gets along well and shares a sense of humor with Calcifer, who can't keep focused enough to try tanning himself but considers every gross part of the process great fun. Calcifer calls him Cowboy because that's his favorite kind of hide. He calls Calcifer Peril because Calce always jumps into situations or puts things in his mouth that are surely someday going to get him killed. Uses the bands on his legs to measure depth or length wherever measurements are necessary, since he only needed to hold them next to a ruler once and then always has his legs handy. |

Remy found out Cip didn't know the very most important aspect of his work: if finished leather can be made into pillows. Remy got together thick thread and sturdy needles and an awl (and a pillowmaking template from Tiri) and painstakingly hand-sewed the answer: a triumphant yes! He left the finished pillow in the tannery on display so Cip will always remember and also because everywhere should have a pillow (and this is such a nice place, it smells so good here!) |
