Baphomet is a talented mage who specializes in energy manipulation. They are able to draw life from their environment--most often plants--and channel it elsewhere. Though this could have made them a powerful healer, they have little interest in coming to the aid of others.

They are most interested in finding ways to toy with their own mortality and pushing their physical limits. They are fascinated by Emperors, and traveled to the Sunbeam Ruins to study their ancestry in more depth. They hoped to find ways to tap into the same energy that fueled the Emperors of yore, much like their cousin Moroi would many years later. Baphomet is no fool, though, and not blinded by hubris like others; they had no intention of experimenting on themself. Instead, they sought out test subjects--over ambitious dragons who come to them willingly, more often than not, in hopes of great power, a power that Baphomet had promised.

Baphomet had been operating in the Hewn City for some time unchecked. Word of disappearances and strange aberrant beasts--eerily reminiscent of those created by the Shade, though small and weak--reached Lanternlea port, and it was decided that something must be done, lest these beasts further wreak havoc on the surrounding villages. House Marsaille, one of the most powerful clans in Light territory, was asked to send their private mercenaries to look into the matter. This group was headed by Kismet.

Baphomet found Kismet first. It was easy enough to dispatch with the low level soldiers accompanying him--after all, what match are mere Pearlcatchers to an Imperial? Let alone an Imperial descended from the Beast herself.

But Kismet was powerful. Powerful in a way Baphomet knew not to trifle with. A grandchild of the Lady Naomi, a warrior of the highest caliber.

They managed to capture Kismet (mostly) unharmed, and brought him back to their makeshift home within the Hewn City. They intended to study him, like a butterfly caught in a net--and found that they couldn't. Kismet was not afraid of them, nor selfish like those who'd come to Baphomet in search of greater power. Kismet knew things about them that he shouldn't--couldn't. And yet, it was as if he had always known them.

No one had ever wanted to get close to Baphomet before, never deemed it worthwhile to brave their sharp tongue. Never seen anything in them besides ruthless ambition.

When Apollyon came looking for Kismet, Baphomet--for the first time in their life--found that that they were afraid to lose something. Someone.

They decided that Kismet would never be left alone and unprotected again, as he had been when they found him. No one else deserved to be at his side, not like they did. Baphomet had worked so hard for their strength--and now they had a reason to use it.
