Alabaster
Sand Witch

Alabaster, the “Sand Witch”, has come far in her life. Ever since her childhood, the idea of journeying has fascinated her. Her parents, however, had other ideas.

“Why not?!” Alabaster lashed her tail in frustration. “You want me to study, right? Learn about the world. So why can’t I go to the desert?!”
“Honey…” Floria gently took Alabaster’s talons in her own. “You know why. To be a guard in the Fortress of Ends, you must be untainted by the other flights. That means no ocean, no forest, and certainly no desert.”
Alabaster let her gaze sweep towards the icy ground. “Just for one night? I promise I’ll be back tomorrow!”
Floria shook her head sadly. “You’re a prodigy of Ice magic, Aly. There’s a wonderful path ahead of you. In time, you’ll forget about silly dreams like this one.”

Her wings flapping above the seemingly endless desert, Alabaster’s eyes glinted with excitement. She thinks she’ll go sand sailing today. Sailing’s the one skill that she learned in the Frigid Floes that she actually enjoys.

The sky’s filled with cloud cover tonight. It’s now or never.
Alabaster frantically threw what little belongings she wanted to keep into a leather bag that she found haphazardly tossed on the ground. Her lanterns, her mage hat… and, of course, her Serthis Support. True to form, it stayed as still as a statue as she coiled it into the satchel.
Loading her bag onto her back, Alabaster looked out at the night sky. By tomorrow, her surroundings would be filled with sand, not the frozen wasteland that she’d been stuck in her whole life. She took a deep breath, and launched herself out of her window towards freedom.

Looking back on it, her first few months in the desert had been much harder than she expected. It was boiling hot, and she hadn’t had the thought to pack anything but comforts. After hawking her jewels to pay for food and water the first few weeks, she discovered that her services as a mage were needed by the desert-dwellers. She may have only been professionally trained in Ice magic, but a mage is a mage regardless of location, and she picked up desert magic much faster than anyone expected her to. Now, it’s all that she uses.

Alabaster rose up, the desert sunrise glinting off her eyes. She shook her wings to clear out the sand that had accumulated overnight. As she looked towards the sky, a mischievous smile spread across her face. So many options, so many journeys to take… and they were all hers. She let out a joyous laugh and leapt into the sky, winging away towards adventure.

Even without wings, I would sail o’er the dunes; even without feet, I would traverse the distant plains. In movement there is knowledge, in knowledge peace, in peace, power. Clothe me in soft silk, sing to me the music of the desert sun. I am as the morning will be: radiant, ascendatory, eyes wide and ever seeing what the wind may bring to me.
