A deep green shadow detaches itself from its fellows, becomes dragon, and moves carefully and swiftly through the undergrowth. Not a sound, not a sound - the forest whispers him its secrets, and there are those who would misuse that power if they could get their claws on him. One, Phoebe, already did, and it hurts every bit of him to think of her. He loved her once - it was something like love, anyway. By the time Shamrock was hatched, though, he knew enough to keep her away from her mother. He never knew of Astilbe, not until it was too late and Phoebe's grip on her was nearly unbreakable. They haunt him, his daughters. Their blossoming, vining powers far surpass his own, which was just what Phoebe had hoped for, of course.

He doesn't speak, not even to his children. Especially not to his children. His heart is full to blooming with love for them, but he watches them from a distance unless they need his help. He's not a good father, but he can help, he can share what the trees have told him. The trees know so much more than any dragon save the gods, are demigods themselves, he thinks. When the pain gets especially bad and the trees can't coax him down from it, he curls up in a corner of Eileen's cave and lets her talk to him. She can hear the forest, too, and she has scars of her own. Anyone else who wishes to speak to him - and oh, there are plenty of dragons who want to know what he knows - will have to find him first, and he's the best there is at hiding.
