| nature magicker |  After Eidheann whisked baby Shamrock away, Phoebe got sneakier. She was determined to hold onto the next of Eidheann's children she hatched. When Astilbe was born, Phoebe hid her away, forbidding her to leave--telling her all sorts of stories about the outside world, the dangers of the swamp--and used her daughter's Nature powers to enhance her experiments. But when Astilbe was a young adult, Eileen sensed her growing magic and tipped Eidheann off. Eidheann immediately tracked down his daughter and broke her out of the cave Phoebe had been keeping her in. He then left her with a bemused Shamrock, much as he had once delivered Shamrock herself to Posei. Astilbe was amazed to find that there was a whole world outside of where she'd grown up. Her powers were considerable and have only grown stronger--and unlike Shamrock, who has always had Posei to guide her, she cannot control her magic very well. She's constantly sprouting flowers and other plants wherever she goes. At first glance, she seems even more powerful than her sister, but her lack of focus makes it difficult for her to do much of anything intentionally. Shamrock knows her father wants her to mentor Astilbe, but she's not sure where to start, and she's uncertain of her little sister in general--she's spent so much time with Phoebe, whom Shamrock has good reason to be wary of, and her uncontrollable powers make her a bit of a handful. Astilbe is friendly but incredibly socially awkward from her years of isolation, and extended interaction tends to exhaust her. She found both friendship and guidance in Hibiscus, who owns the clan's teashop, and whom Astilbe very quickly fell deeply in love with (a bit of a terrifying experience for someone who only knew of love from reading about it in books). Hibiscus' kindhearted, patient acceptance made Astilbe feel at home, and although she's not magical herself, her extensive knowledge of plants allows her to help Astilbe get a firmer grasp on her powers. Now Astilbe helps Hibiscus's garden grow, and the teashop's offerings have only improved. All in all, Astilbe is glad that her father stole her away into this strange, wide world. But her mother is never far...
