Marlais is one of the strongest spellcasters of the Southwind Clan. Not only that, her incredible size and strong limbs would allow her to crush small dragons with ease. However, she has little interest in fighting. She just wants a quiet, peaceful life together with her mate Neren. Marlais would fight and give everything she has, should it be required of her, but she hopes that those occasions are very rare. Most of the time, she is very quiet except for when she's speaking to her mate. But she is slowly getting out of her shell and she proves to be a dragon who wants well for everyone around her. Should someone come to her, asking for help, she would be overjoyed and do whatever she can to help. She is a little anxious around strangers however. Fearing that her and Neren's previous Clans will one day try to force them to return or even kill them, she is cautious with strangers until she knows that she can trust them. She's not going to let anyone take Neren away from her and she's ready to defend him with her life.

In the area of the Tangled Wood where she was born and raised, several Clans had created their own small empires with noble families to lead them. She was the firstborn hatchling to one noble family and was destined to rule over her family's empire. To ensure that they would have a strong future leader, she was trained both physically and to be able to wield Shadow magic. She turned out to be quite a natural at Shadow magic and became so powerful that excess magic swirl around her nearly at all time while she is awake. Despite being rather quiet and not wanting to bring attention to herself, she was quickly both feared and loved by the empire. It was difficult to hide herself without the constant use of magic. After all, she was an incredibly large dragon.

One day, things changed as her parents told her that they had an incredible opportunity to their empire. A powerful Clan had agreed to merge together with them! But for this to happen, there had to be a political union of mates. Marlais had to be the one from their Clan to become mate to the one from the other Clan.

As much as she wanted to be a good leader and help her Clan, just the thought of becoming mates with someone she didn't love tore at her heart. But she couldn't decline. A date was set for when this union would take place and now they just had to get started the preparations for both the union of the mates and the union of the Clans. Marlais helped now and then but most of the times she traveled to somewhere she could be alone, far away from the Clan. Unbeknown to her, she was always followed.

One day, when the date for the union was not far away, she had once again traveled a fair distance from the rest of her Clan. She collapsed onto the ground and wept. Why couldn't her mate be some that she loved? But her thoughts were interrupted as there was suddenly a small voice by her. She looked at the tiny, tiny Nocturne that was suddenly by her side. Marlais asked for his name, which turned out to be Neren, and she gave her name in return. The Nocturne asked why was crying and she explained the situation she was in. What she had to do for the sake of her Clan. The two of them ended up talking for quite some time before Marlais had to return home.

But she returned to the same spot many times afterwards, where Neren would show up and they would talk to each other. The tiny Nocturne wasn't very good with the social aspect and he confessed that he rarely even had the chance to speak to someone who treated him like a proper dragon. But she appreciates his attempts and praised him as he became better at it. The awkward Nocturne still managed to make her smile and even laugh at times. Soon enough, they grew to love each other.

But the day of the union was rapidly approaching. Distressed, they decided that there was only one thing they could do: run away together. A plan was quickly formed and executed. With the combined powers of Neren's skills and Marlais' Shadow powers, they managed to leave the territory unseen. But where now? The two of them decided to travel as far away as they could from the Tangled Wood, hoping they would be safe there. Neren was certain that his Clan wouldn't take this lightly.

They traveled all the way to the Southern Icefields and soon found themselves among the Cloudscrape Crags. A friendly Clan that called themselves the Southwind offered them a place to live. These days, Neren and Marlais live with the Southwind Clan, happily in love and with no obligations of their previous Clans. Neren occasionally helps out as a scout for the Guards. But under their happiness, there's a streak of fear. What if their previous Clans one day try to find them?

Noticeable relationships:

Marlais loves her mate Neren more than anything else. Even if the Nocturne was originally sent to kill her, she holds no ill will towards him for it and just feel grateful that he helped her find the courage to leave her home.

After Marlais and her mate decided to settle down here, Ophelia soon became a good friend of Marlais. Despite the difference in both appearance and upbringing, their personalities match and they feel like they can relate much to each other.

Trivia:

• She carries a journal with her that holds all the thoughts and experiences she has had through the years, although most of them are since before she fled her previous home. These days she is comfortable to talk to Neren and her friends about her thoughts instead of keeping it all to herself. The journal has become a kind of treasure to her as it shows her growth and development, and it contains a few entries about precious moments in her life.
