Persephone is not a resident of the House of Echidna, merely a frequent visitor, and so it's only a privileged few that know even a small part of her story. There is certainly much speculation about the specter made of bones and roses and the night-dark prince that sometimes accompanies her. Most are smart enough to not try to learn the secrets of someone known best as "the monster house's poisonseller."

If the tale is to be believed secondhand, Persephone was once a noblewoman, the unwed firstborn daughter of some king or duke of particular political import. As such, she was the frequent target of assassination attempts by a political rival. Yet Persephone never even came close to death; the poisons slipped into her drinks and the knives drawn against her in the dark always found themselves in other nobles' throats. (Particularly nobles that Persephone herself was happy to be rid of. Purely by accident, she would assure you.)

It is said that her uncanny evasion of Death was what caught the attention of one of Death's daughters, Alighieri, who came to Persephone at a party, disguised as a masked prince. As Persephone survived attack after attack, the Young Death came to her again and again in different disguises, and the two quickly became entranced by one another. Alighieri was charmed by how little Persephone feared death, and could not help but chase what constantly alluded her. The clever Persephone was intrigued to know more about the mysterious stranger, who possessed more wit and charm than the rest of Persephone's court put together.

No one knows exactly how Persephone eventually met the death that had pursued her so ardently for so long. Common gossip suggests her suitor eventually revealed herself as a death goddess, and Persephone took her own life to join her lover willingly in the underworld. Others claim it was the prince herself who killed Persephone, having grown impatient with the clumsy efforts of mortal assassins. However the two were finally united, it was the prince's father Death who decided to bestow an aspect of his divinity on Persephone, transforming her into a demigoddess of poison, as a wedding present for the strange couple.

Since her apotheosis, Persephone has appeared in her skeletal aspect to bestow "miracles" on those who can only solve their troubles with a bottle of belladonna. She has no issue selling and gifting poisons of all types to those she believes will use them "wisely," while at the same time appearing before others to warn them against attacks she disapproves of. It's known that she keeps a greenhouse of poisonous plants behind the House of Echidna, as certain deadly plants will only grow there for reasons even she does not know. While it's difficult to predict when she might appear at the House, some desperate would-be assassins have been known to take lodging at the House for months in hopes of catching an audience with her.

Those who have socialized with her note her confidence, her noble manner, her intelligence, her occasional flippant cruelty, and her condescension. It is easy to see Persephone is the type who was used to being listened to even before she was literally made a goddess. Yet hese traits do not always combine to make for an unpleasant conversation, and even those that dislike her have a hard time not complimenting her bravery and sense of humor. To those who spark Persephone's curiosity or earn her respect, her positive attention can feel like a special privilege bestowed only upon them.
