Alighieri is not a resident of the House of Echidna, merely an occasional escort of Persephone, the poisonseller. Her infrequent appearances at the House certainly prompt intense speculation about the masked prince and the skeletal maiden she's always seen with. However, those that try and speak with the prince seem to leave her presence more confused than before, their minds still burning with questions and their hearts mysteriously heavy with the unshakable feeling that life is too short.

If the monsters of the House of Echidna are to be believed, Alighieri is a daughter of Death himself, a prince in the Royal Court of Death. (Never a "princess," Alighieri is very strict on this one particular fact about herself. While she identifies as a woman, there is something about the title of "Prince" which resonates with her on a fundamental level that she will cede to no naysayer.) It is said that she has numerous siblings and cousins in the underworld, each ruling over their own specific realm.

Alighieri is formally named the Lady Prince of Death in One's Prime, and presides over an afterlife for those who died at the height of their potential, their best years preemptively cut short. Her realm is one grand, unending gala of the world's greatest creatives and leaders and thinkers, expertly curated by Alighieri for an eternity of stimulating conversation and fabulous outfits. She loves nothing more than chandeliers and exotic foods and poet-revolutionaries composing verses about her dazzling eyes.

However, there was one guest who kept stubbornly refusing her invitation to the party, a lovely noble named Persephone who just never seemed to die when she was meant to. Alighieri began appearing before this dragon in various disguises, trying to figure out how she was avoiding her father's call. As these visits continued over the months and years, the two quickly became entranced by one another. Alighieri was charmed by how little Persephone feared death, and could not help but want to chase what constantly alluded her. The clever Persephone was intrigued to know more about the mysterious stranger, who possessed more wit and charm than the rest of Persephone's court put together.

No one knows exactly how Persephone eventually met the death that had pursued her so ardently for so long. Common gossip suggests Alighieri eventually revealed herself as a death goddess, and her lover took her own life to join the prince willingly in the underworld. Others claim it was the goddess herself who killed Persephone, having grown impatient with the clumsy efforts of mortal assassins. However the two were finally united, it seems Alighieri's father decided to give Persephone an aspect of his divinity as a wedding present. He named her the Patron Saint of Poison, a title befitting his noble daughter's bride.

Alighieri has always made frequent trips to the living world to socialize in disguise with all the most beautiful and talented people. She would not normally lower herself to visit the relatively unglamorous House of Echidna, but Persephone makes frequent trips to the House to grow and gather rare poisonous plants in the House's gardens. Alighieri has never been seen visiting alone, though she has cryptically invited some of the House's more high-profile guests to join her at "more interesting venues." She also harbors some sort of grudge against Dullahan, though none know the details.

Those she chooses to grace with her company will find her charming and flirtatious, if almost theatrically so. She's clearly honed her small talk abilities to razor sharpness through millennia of party conversation, though her dearly departed guests have colored her sense of humor somewhat darker than courtly manners usually allow. Her memory is impeccable, and she possesses a seemingly endless energy for telling anecdotes. Some find her endless name-dropping and rehearsed witticisms obnoxious, but those that are taken in even slightly by her charms are in real danger of falling for her completely.
