Caesennia discovered her talent for magic at a young age, and with it, a thirst for power that would define her life. It began innocently enough, with the standard transmutations and conjurations expected of young mages everywhere, but these quickly lost their charm for her, and she found that her improvement began to stall.

Unable to continue teaching herself, she sought an apprenticeship with an experienced wizard. He accepted, and when she joined him in the kingdom of Ivadour in the Southern Icefields, she proved to be an eager and capable student.

But as her power grew, so did her ambitions. Caesennia became increasingly frustrated with her mentor's refusal to allow her to study darker magic. Defying his wishes, she began to pursue the black arts in secret, cobbling together crude rituals from fragments of the spells she did know.

What harm could it possibly do? After all, she was only experimenting on rats... for the time being.

Familiar_3.png Her dabblings were hardly limited to necromancy, of course, or even to forbidden magic as a whole. Though dangerous and untested, her newly invented fusions of spells were just as often "legitimate" and earned her praise from her mentor, who remained unaware of just what Caesennia was doing when his back was turned. Eventually he declared that there was no more he could teach her, as her power began to exceed his own.

Once again, her progress slowed - and with no way to speed it, the Skydancer sought power of a different sort. She began offering her services as a wizard to aristocrats and powerful merchant families, continuing her unholy experiments in secret while worming her way into ever higher rungs of society, until her prestige and renown attracted the attention of the royal family.
Caesennia was summoned to the throne and offered a position as the official Court Mage of Ivadour, which she greedily accepted. Addicted to the thrill of influencing the royal court - and through it, the kingdom - she found that, her patrons not being experts in magic themselves, they often couldn't tell the difference between the real thing and nonsense she made up. Caesennia took full advantage of this, manipulating King Quintus by providing him with advice ostensibly received by communicating with the dead. Of course, no such ritual took place; the words and whims were the mage's own - and when the advice didn't pan out, she took none of the blame. It was a perfect setup.

But there were limits to what the sorceress could achieve through this deception; she could only get what she wanted if she could make it sound plausibly good for the kingdom or the royal family, and not just for her. One day, it occurred to her that she could have so much more if only she was a member of the royal family instead of merely serving them.

And perhaps, she thought, that wasn't such a far-off possibility after all. The King himself had never moved on after the loss of his Queen, but his brother, Artorius, seemed attractive enough, and had no mate - a golden opportunity for the ambitious mage.

So Caesennia began working her charms, both magical and manipulative, on her quarry. It was subtle at first, a sort of safety net in case he responded negatively. But this concern was unfounded, and soon Artorius was wrapped entirely around her claw. Still, the game went on longer than strictly necessary, as the sorceress found (much to her own surprise) that she genuinely enjoyed it. But she never forgot her true goal, and her honest affection for Artorius merely sweetened the deal of entry into the royal family - of life at the top. And for a while, this was enough.

But Caesennia was never satisfied for long, and her thirst for power returned. Why settle for what she had when she could be queen? If anything were to happen to King Quintus and his son, Prince Regulus, then Artorius would be king. She could easily arrange this, but she would need her mate's support, and getting him involved would be a very delicate affair indeed.

She began by slowly unveiling the depths of her magical pursuits to her mate - each exposure carefully calculated, priming him to accept her use of necromancy when the time came to reveal it. He needed to be comfortable with the full span of her powers if her plan was to succeed. And it was in her tower, as he stared in awe at a reanimated mouse, that she began the second phase of her plot. If only he was king, she lamented, she would not have to hide her studies or live in fear of discovery. She didn't suggest murder - not yet - but the seed was planted. Artorius was an easily manipulated dragon, and she could nurture his jealousy and greed until he was ready. And once he was, she offered him a chance at the throne. All she needed was access to the Queen's crypt.

And he granted it to her. The necromancer and her mate schemed until they had the perfect plan. Caesennia would reanimate the Queen's body and use the zombie to publicly kill the King, then pin it on the Prince and have him executed. In a stunning display of irony, she would claim that Regulus, in his impatience to inherit the throne, had stolen her spellbook and pieced together a necromantic spell to use on his own mother's body, all so he could blame the court mage for his crime.

Unfortunately for Caesennia and Artorius, they were overheard plotting by some servants, who rushed to sound the alarm. But luck twisted again, and one of the servants knocked over a vase with his tail in his haste, alerting the Skydancers to his presence. Forced to act early, they scrambled to salvage the plan.
They reached the King just in time to see him react to the servants' warning; they had to act now or lose everything. Artorius murdered his brother right there as Caesennia cast a wicked spell. The royal guards retaliated immediately, but they were able to defend themselves until, to the guards' horror, the rotting Queen shambled into the room and fell upon her prey - the very dragons who had protected her in life.

With no time to lose, the necromancer turned to cleaning up the loose ends; she continued to cast, raising other bodies in the royal crypt, setting some of them after the fleeing servants, and others after random innocents to sell the effect. Then she added the final detail - she burst dramatically into the street to "warn" the people that Regulus had unleashed a swarm of undead. Finished with the guards, her mate made a show of coming to the "rescue."

When the chaos cleared, they spun their story, accusing the Prince of necromancy and regicide; Artorius claimed the throne himself and sentenced his nephew to be executed - but when the time came, Regulus was nowhere to be found, putting the entire plan in jeopardy. If the truth got out, they would be the ones on the chopping block.

Caesennia, desperate to put and end to the Prince as soon as possible, has started building an army of undead to hunt him down, blaming his supposedly shoddily-constructed spell for the ever-increasing number of rampaging undead. But she is well aware that the people are skeptical, and that her newfound rule is shaky at best.

And she has already begun seeking a way to ensure her own immortality.
