Thinking that there is no way out for him, and thinking for sure that he'll be just like the rest of the infected, he sent his Captain away without him, while remaining in the underwater facility which was collapsing on itself. In an attempt to save his life from the drowning and the explosions, Piers' body formed into a cocoon.

With the chaos going on, however, and the damage sustained to his body, he hadn’t had the possibility to emerge from it and find safety; and so he remained nested inside, slowly healing and resting. Albert, known nowadays as NU, was to pick up the dormant cocoon instead, bringing it to Neo Umbrella’s labs and began with his plan to make him into a super soldier - and his best ally.

He used the confused and vulnerable state of Piers to project false memories onto him, turning the dragon against those who were his family once. A year later, Piers was to master his new abilities and powers thanks to no one else but NU, and has become his equal - just as planned.
