Crack.

It all happened so fast.

One moment I’m running around and playing with my sister, the next moment it goes dark with a sharp pain going through my head like someone pierced it with a needle and all I can process is confusion, confusion and the feeling that I’d just lost something.

Lost… something?

I wonder what’s going to happen.

Three days later

“I………ay?”
The world around me is blurry. It’s blurry and spinning. I can make out a faint, blue shape. My sister?

After a moment my vision becomes clearer. I was right, it was River. She looks relieved to see me. It also looks like she’d been crying. Why was she crying?

I try to read her for answers, but all I get is a sharp pain in my head and a feeling of emptiness. Why? Why is this happening? I look to my sister.

She must’ve read me, because all she does is point to a puddle of water nearby. It’s surface is perfectly smooth, and there’s a strong urge to stroke it, to have my claws go through it like a knife through butter. But I know what she means, even without reading her. I look at the surface.

“It’s…… Cracked.”’

Those are the only words I was able to get out. In the puddle stood a young Skydancer, mouth agape at what he saw: a cracked orb on his reflection’s head. My head. My gem.
Why? How? I had so many questions, but before I could ask any of them my sister said:

“You hit your head against a rock. After that, you fainted. You’ve been out for three days. I was afraid that I’d never see you again. That you were.. gone.”

She looked like she was about to cry. I quickly grabbed her and hugged her, all while thinking about her words.

Fate can be a cruel thing.

Radiant cracked his gem when he was still a hatchling. This event caused him to be unable to read other's emotions, and has become an outcast under Skydancers, One of the few of his kind who still cares about him is his sister, River. The two are very close, and while their bond has weakened over time, it's still common to find River and Radiant together.

Before Radiant cracked his gem he was a very optimistic, easily excited young dragon, who loved to play games. He always had time to play with his sister and other hatchlings. One day, when he was out plying, he cracked his gem by crashing head-first into a particularly sharp rock. When he came by a couple days later, he found he could no longer read emotions.

The incident definitely changed Radiant, and those who knew him when he was young were barely able to recognize him afterwards. His mood soured a lot more easily, and he snapped at anyone with seemingly little reason. His "accident", as he calls it, became an incredibly sore spot for him, and he would become mad at everyone who even as much as mentioned it-the only exception being his sister.

Radiant started wearing a hat to cover up his broken gem. He will act violently to anyone who touches it or tries to steal it. it's probably for the best you don't steal it-he will throw a massive fit and can-and will-attack you.
