Biography
Ilaria the Lookout Eagle Eyes in a Crow’s Nest Theme: Blackheart |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ilaria gripped the railings of the sailing vessel and peered down into the deep, nameless waters beneath. The waves reflected the stars above, and the night was quiet and still. What creatures lurked down there, she had no idea; and with any luck she’d never know. She wasn’t a Water dragon, after all. The deep’s mysteries were no more important or interesting to her than a billowing volcano or a solid mountain. “Ilaria.” Her father’s deep baritone interrupted her musings, his mass enough to shift the boat the one side. Snappers made good sailors all the same. “Were you just going to stare at the waves all night, or were you going to take the sails?” Ilaria felt her mottled cheeks flush with color. “Yes. Right. Sorry, Da.” She trotted to the mast, fluffing up a gale with her Wind magic. The sails buffeted, but not nearly as much as when her father took control of the massive ship’s sails. Her father sighed and turned away. Ilaria hoped he wasn’t disappointed in her. It was just that she liked looking so much. She could look out at the sea for days and not tire of it. Ilaria’d worked a gentle breeze into the boat’s still sails when her father interrupted her yet again. “Ilaria,” he said, and she snapped to attention. With a nod of his giant green head, he indicated the top of the mast. “Why don’t you fly on up there and take a look for us. See if there are any storms on the horizon.” Nearly unable to contain her excitement at a new assignment, Ilaria spread her wings. She pulled them close. Checking to make sure none of the other sailors, especially the captain, were around, she bounded over to give her father a quick nudge of thanks. It happened so quick neither of them responded to it before Ilaria flew up to the top of the mast to see the calm waters ahead of them. |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Ilaria’s mother has an opinion or two about how a lady Pearlcatcher ought to act. Becoming a sailor is not one of the ways a lady Pearlcatcher ought to act. The Lady of Light didn’t give us wings to float around on the water all day, she’d say. Her father, a Snapper, would invariably return with the fact that Snappers have wings, too, but rarely flew. That always led to arguments over whose god had made the mistake: were Snapper wings a flaw, or Pearlcatcher ego? Ilaria is, indeed, proud that she’s a Pearlcatcher, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be anywhere but sailing on the sea. She enjoys the vast expanse just stretching before her as far as she can see. Many dragons say it’s dull and uninteresting. Ilaria begs to differ: nothing to block her view. She also tinkers with making toy ships, learning the basics of aerodynamics from her mother’s friend, Brine, the airshipwright. These little trinkets don’t let her do her job any better (they do, at times, distract her), but they can bring in a pretty pile of treasure if she sells her crafts at port. She’s always excited to have a bit of spending money. To remain useful on the ship in case of emergencies, Ilaria took up archery. There was little better use of her skills and her far-seeing eyes. Fashioning arrows from corrosive depins the crew catches rubbing against the bottom of their boat, destroying the hull, she has become as adept at using her arrows against flying attackers, as Harpies have taken to attacking dragon traders with impunity whenever they near a flock’s home cliffs. Fortunately for the crew, Ilaria always sees them from a ways off. Even though she spends the majority of her time on the water, she is clearly a Wind dragon. Hopping from boat to airship to boat again, nobody would doubt her inborn wanderlust. She’s handy on nearly all parts of the ship, from the sails or balloons that keep a ship moving or aloft to sweeping the dust and salt grime from the decks. However, her favorite and best job is in the crow’s nest, keeping a watch out for storms, attacking Maren schools or Harpy flocks, and land. She’s spent so much time looking toward the horizon, she can see what’s coming almost as clearly as if she’d received a vision from the Tidelord himself. |
━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Ilaria’s father, Horatio possesses the ranking of Scourge on the sailing ship Shattershell. He hopes that she’ll join him one day, but he knows that the sea can take a dragon far away to never return. » » With all her days at sea, sitting in the crow’s nest, Ilaria has come to find enclosed spaces on land nearly intolerable. Whenever she finds she has to sleep on the shore, she does so under an open sky. |
aesthetic: Ilaria is tough enough to face the sea’s raging wings, and she likes her appearance to reflect that. She likes armor of both metal and leather, and neutral colors to help her blend in. |
likes: gazing into the distance, stargazing, flying through the clouds over the ocean dislikes: sandbars, enclosed spaces, depins, squawkers, bays _________________________________________________________ |
