“No.” Kurth laughed. “I remember your dad, and you aren’t that much like him.”

Kupari didn’t know whether to take that as a compliment. She turned about in the field, Kurth’s dreameater snuffling the grass nearby. “Thanks a lot,” she said sarcastically, since he likely didn’t mean to be flattering.

“That isn’t what I meant,” Kurth mumbled. “You are smart like him, but he wasn’t as magically diverse as you are. You’ve pulled elementals out of the woodwork, and they listen to you.” He turned his eye toward the forest, the gateway to the darkest depths of the Viridian Labyrinth. A Sapling Speaker, acolyte of the Gladekeeper, blinked glowing eyes from the shade of an oak.

Giving Kurth a grin, Kupari motioned for the Sapling to come out to her. “Well, in that case, thank you.” The Sapling waddled over to her, leaves rustling. As soon as the creature reached her, it bent and put its knobbed bark hand to the ground beneath. A flower sprouted beneath its fingers and bloomed. The Sapling plucked it and handed it to her. “And thank you.”

Kurth shook his head in disbelief. Or awe. Or both. “You sure you’re a Wind dragon, Ku?” He chuckled at the glare he got.

“Yeah,” she threw back. “Pretty sure.” Sapling behind her, they turned back to camp. “Where to next?”

Kurth shrugged. “I hope it’s the Tangled Wood. At this rate, you’ll find all the elements with you by autumn.”

The Sapling Speaker stopped its waddle to revitalize a dying weed. Kupari smiled at the little creature. “Maybe. I hope so. I think I like them as much as they seem to like me.”

Though Kupari is a healer by training, she is a wanderer by heart. Her earliest memories are of her father telling her his quest to spread the love of travelers, as taught by the Windsinger, and to one day join in the great search to find him. Her father, Hikaru, was a traveler, and his steps took him from the Windsinger’s steppes to the Icewarden’s ice plains and the clan Kupari was hatched to. Kupari’s home-clan moved from the Icewarden’s domain to the Windsinger’s, and Hikaru sent his daughter to his mother, Aquarius, living with a clan of beast hunters not too far away. Kupari’s grandmother taught her the art of healing Wind magic, but it seemed the Windsinger blessed Kupari in another way.

A cornerstone of her beliefs is to treat all travelers who come her way with the welcome she’d offer the Windsinger, for he has a heart for wayward wanderers. No matter the color of their wings or their eyes, if their feet lead them far from home, a true follower of the Windsinger will offer a place to sleep and food to eat. As if a symbol of her acceptance of all elements, Kupari is blessed with the ability to communicate with all elemental acolytes, whether Wind or or Ice or Arcane. These acolytes seem on a quest to see the lands of their gods saved from dangerous beasts, and follow Kupari to assist the beast hunters in the protection of nearby dragon clans. Under certain circumstances, they will even fight Beastclans, but only to frighten them away with the assurance that Kupari will heal the wounded after the battle. Despite all indications to the contrary, Kupari believes she will see the war ended in her lifetime.

Kupari sometimes says that she would be nothing if she were not Wind. Her heart and her soul, somewhat like her grandmother’s, is tied indivisibly to the Windsinger and the ideals of hospitality. Though Kupari is not likely to be as gregarious as her grandmother or outgoing as some other members of her clan, the Tempest Chase, she hopes she is still a testament to the Windsinger wherever she goes.
