The sea is a primordial beast, with unpredictable whims and earthshaking power. It cannot be tamed, harnessed, or restrained. This is a lesson that many learn the hard way. Dragons try to bend the sea to their will, and at first, they succeed. They see only the first layer of the water: the lapping waves, the ocean currents, the borderless expanse that lets their boats glide across the surface like a knife through shimmering silk.
Quite often, it is the last lesson they are ever taught.
But some treat the sea as a powerful deity, an entity to be honored, not merely dismissed as another adversary. They work alongside it, bending themselves to its whims. To these, the sea opens its arms wide.
Hey there! This is a guild of seafaring rogues and adventurers called the Ocean’s Bane. As a registered Ocean’s Bane, you can participate in events, collect prizes and badges, and enter contests, all while climbing the ranking ladder.
You can register up to three dragons as official Bane. Once you have at least one dragon registered, you may participate in events hosted by myself, including roleplays, raffles, contests, and games. It’s also a good place to start writing lore for dragons. See the Applications post in the directory below for application info and the form!
This is our main discussion and share thread. There will be a roleplay thread once the guild gets big enough, and several threads in creative corner once events are actually happening.
This thread is just finishing being polished up, so there may be some inconsistencies, typos, loose ends scattered throughout the thread. If you find one of these, just lemme know and I’ll fix it. Also, if you see an SSSSSS or something like that, it was a placeholder for the name of the guild, as I had a while when I couldn’t decide on a name.
Registration Windows are currently OPEN.
Upcoming events: Thresher Trial, date TBD
Please note that all links below are temporarily broken as I transfer the thread from creative corner to FRD!

Rankings
These are the rankings of the Ocean’s Bane, from lowest to highest ranking. A more powerful (or ‘upgraded’) version of a rank, such as the kind obtained from a writing competition, is one tier higher than its normal counterpart. For example, if you had a Scourge, won a writing contest, and decided to make your dragon a more powerful Scourge, the dragon would be equal in ranking to a Tiderider or Sandstriker.
Once people start registering, dragons will be listed under their rank.

Irukandji is the lowest rank in the Ocean’s Bane, composed mostly of the children of older Ocean’s Bane members. All hatchlings who join are automatically sorted into this rank. They remain there until the first day of each month, where all adults in the Irukandji are locked in the bottom of the Shattershell’s hull for a night and a day (keep in mind that this lower hull is flooded with water). This time span is called the Thresher Trial, because once the sun rises, three fully-grown thresher sharks are released into the hull for the Irukandji to fight. The Irukandji are armed only with their teeth and claws. During this time, the dragons are closely observed. At the end of the trial, the remaining Irukandji are sorted into their new rankings depending on how they performed during the Trial.
All hatchlings fall under this rank, and remain here until they are an adult and take part in the Thresher Trial. After the Trial, they may be promoted to Scourge, Sea Scourge, Aquacendium, or Thresher.

Scourge
Scourges serve as the brute force of the Ocean’s Bane. The majority of dragons goes to this rank. They are armed with weapons salvaged from shipwrecks, primarily tridents and swords. More skilled Scourges are given an iconic weapon: a heavy net, with several fishing hooks dangling from its nets. This allows the wielder to restrain an enemy while the hooks tear into their scales. However, many more Scourges go untrained. They rely on their own teeth, claws, and scavenged weapons to get past in this world.
All adult dragons are placed in this rank when they first join. Dragons equipped with flatfins or deepsea bulbs, or of the water flight, will be placed under Sea Scourge.
[columns][item=Veteran's Shoulder Scars][nextcol]One does not spend time in the Ocean’s Bane without gaining a scar or two. Members display these trophies proudly as a sign of their skill. Sea Scourge
Sea Scourge are regular Scourges with aquatic ability. They may be promoted to Tiderider rank, but not without proving their worth. Their main task is to attack from the water, gaining an element of surprise. Unlike the Tideriders, they swim out in the open, rather than the shallow waves near the shore. They can investigate shipwrecks and fight sea-dwelling opponents, a valuable skill out in the open ocean.

Sandstrikers and Tideriders
Two groups operate outside of the normal chain of command, but work in tandem to carry out the same task. They are the Tideriders and the Sandstrikers, commanded by Flotsam and Jetsam, respectively. Flotsam and Jetsam take orders from Komadori alone, placing them beneath only Komadori and the Captains in the ultimate hierarchy.
Tideriders and Sandstrikers work in close approximation to carry out their tasks. When planning an assassination or attack near shore, they coordinate their movement with that of the rising or lowering tides, letting the water hide them. During the first phase, one group will set the stage; Tideriders for high tide, Sandstrikers for low tide. At the end of this first phase when the tides begin to change, the group is quickly and covertly replaced by the other, thus begins the second phase. During this time period, the new group quietly finishes off the target and retreats back into the shadows.
Tiderider
Members of the Tideriders must be adapted to the water in order to efficiently carry out their tasks. Dragons not born with these features naturally can sometimes receive them as a blessing, if they perform admirably during their service to the Ocean’s Bane . They must be deft and agile among the waves, where the water is constantly in motion. Tideriders are often used to stealthily board a ship, though flat-out underwater combat is not uncommon. They are trained from a young age to be skilled in aquatic assassinations.

Sandstrikers make use of duneglider capes and their sand-repelling properties in their shore-based attacks. Many have snake companions to assist them in assassinations and venom making. Sandstrikers are often lightning dragons, so that they are used to burrowing in shallow sand. They frequently don duneglider capes to help them camouflage. They act as a line of defense while the crew is docked in port and the ships are at risk of a land-based attack. Sandstrikers sometimes carry rattlesnakes to assist them, as snakes can fit into small areas, and their poisonous fangs can slip in between scales faster than a dragon’s.

Aquacendium
Aquacendia (singular: Aquacendium) are mages. An Aquacendium’s primary weapon is an extremely volatile type of potion stored in flasks designed to explode upon impact. Aquacendia must be extremely agile and careful so as to not detonate the potions before they reach their intended target. The flasks are spherical in shape and are wrapped in twine, so that they look like glass buoys. The name Aquacendium comes from an ancient language, and the words for water and explosion are combined.
The potion itself is created using several components, most of which are mundane items found in the ocean. The primary ingredient is the same stuff that causes bioluminescence in deep-sea creatures. The potion takes several hours to create, but it remains a simple liquid of blended ingredients until the bioluminescent stuff is added, upon which it gains its explosive property. The longer the bioluminescence is mixed in with the rest of the components, the more destructive it is once it is launched. Most Aquacendia carry their flasks without this final activating ingredient, storing this last component in a separate flask and mixing it in only seconds before the flask is thrown. Only higher-level Aquacendia carry the potion as-is, once they are deemed skilled enough to do so.
Some dragons may be placed in this rank from their Thresher Trial. Otherwise, they may be promoted from Scourge or Sea Scourge.

Thresher
The rank of Thresher may only be achieved by a dragon who struck the killing blow on the thresher shark of their Trial. This means that each dragon has the chance to acheive this rank only once. Threshers are elite warriors who are honored for their victory at such a young age. They train to be deadly in close-quarters combat, and tend to lead Scourges in their coordinated attacks. As a trophy from the first kill that earned them the rank of Thresher, they take the teeth of the shark they killed during their trial.
Threshers often train sharks for combat, using them the same way a dragon would use a pack of hunting hounds. These sharks frequently join underwater battles. For reasons unknown, Pomeranians are sometimes used in place of sharks. This was an order issued by Komadori.
Dragons can only earn this rank by killing the thresher shark in their Thresher Trial. This gives each dragon exactly one chance to acheive this rank.

Siren
Sirens are stealthy assassins draped in shimmering silks. They use this guise of beauty to hide their true nature. They wrap their limbs in silk and fabric, concealing knives, bows, and arrows. Victims are often drawn to Sirens’ beauty, never knowing their own mistake before their throats are slit. They never see the faint bloodstains spattering the silk. Sirens are typically graceful, sleek, and swift. This is where the name Siren comes from: They are beautiful, and they are lethal.
The practice of draping themselves in silk is a method unique to this rank. When underwater, the silken fabric wafts gently in the currents, obscuring the dragon’s shape. A victim under attack sees only a mass of billowing silk.
Sirens with the required skill are extremely rare, as a result they are used as an elite force who do close-quarters fighting only for assassinations, and battles where the enemy is exceptionally formiadable. Otherwise, they attack from far off using bows and arrows.

The rank of Captain is awarded to those who have been in service to Ocean’s Bane for a long time, and have proven themselves worthy of this honor. A Captain, as the name suggests, captains a ship. There is one Captain per boat under control by the Ocean’s Bane. They take orders only from the High Captain.
Captains are free to steer their boats as they please, and they often have a small crew with them composed of several Scourges, two Sandstrikers and Tideriders each, and three Aquacendia, at minimum. More powerful captains with larger ships have larger crews, sometimes including Threshers and Sirens.
At the moment, there is only one Captain. This is Reaver, steering the Mimic Jaw. Rarely, there will be an event where capture of a new ship is possible. For each new ship, one dragon may be promoted to Captain. In order to obtain this rank you must receive a special promotion from an event, and be of at least Thresher rank or higher.

The guild is spread across several clans. Many members are out on their own, lone warriors and bandits who make a living through theft. More powerful dragons may form small groups, often roving the seas on commandeered ships and led by a Thresher or Sea Scourge. But a select few live, fight, and work alongside Komadori and the Captains, piloting two massive ships as they conquer the sea.
Though the Ocean’s Bane are ruthless warriors, they also possess a warped, unspoken code of honor. The price of breaking the code is banishment, and by extension, death, as no member of Ocean’s Bane will let a banished member live, should the exile return. They also possess a strange flair for flamboyance and charm, a trait resulting from Komadori’s odd personality. Oftentimes the arrival of an Ocean’s Bane ship coming into port is a grand show of massive waves and seafaring leviathans (the familiars of members onboard). A local tavern or marketplace may be temporarily be overrun with dragons who disappear once the Ocean’s Bane ship leaves port.
The Ocean’s Bane is currently in command of two ships: The Shattershell and the Mimic Jaw. The Shattershell is the older and larger of the two, and serves as the central hub of Ocean’s Bane. It gets its name from its hull, which is plated in the shattered shell of a Crystalhide Jester slain by Komadori. This makeshift armor gives the Shattershell its name, as well as a nearly impenetrable first line of defense. Only dragons of the rank Scourge and above are granted access to the stern deck (because I don’t want to use the term poop deck) of the Shattershell. The middle deck houses most members. The lower deck is actually always flooded, due to trapdoors in the ship’s hull that open up, letting in water. This means that a great deal of the ship is underwater, which eases stealthy underwater attacks. Due to the seawater constantly flooding the deck, many sea creatures get swept along, which provides food for the crew. It is also used for practice combat.
The Mimic Jaw is smaller and swifter than the Shattershell. Its prow is graced by a figurehead of a Snarling Mimic. The Mimic Jaw’s control room is taken up mostly by a massive, shallow wooden bowl large enough for a guardian to sit in comfortably. The bowl is filled with a luminescent aqua material, neither liquid nor gas. Atop this mysterious liquid glides several small wooden miniatures, mostly boats. At the center of the bowl, at all times, is a tiny replica of the Mimic Jaw. This is essentially the steering wheel of the ship, as it can only be moved by positioning the ship’s smaller miniature and sending it in the desired direction. The Mimic Jaw imitates the movement. Other ships within a certain radius are also represented in the bowl, as well as large leviathans and other large, detectable objects. This makes the Mimic Jaw radiate a strong aura of ambient magic, and so it is crewed primarily by mages who draw power from this aura. The ship’s halls are illuminated with glass buoys filled with bioluminescent water, casting the walls in dim aqua light (they look a great deal like the flasks used by the Aquacendia, however these are significantly less likely to explode).

The guild is spread across several clans. Many members are out on their own, lone warriors and bandits who make a living through theft. Also, I’m putting together a playlist because I have too much time on my hands. Master of Tides by Linsey Stirling Davy Jones’ Theme by Hans Zimmer
Are there any criteria for registering?
Not super strict, but yes. In order to register, your dragon must have some Ocean’s Bane related lore. It should be more than a few sentences. Some ranks mention a dragon being a particular flight or breed (Tideriders are usually water, Sandstrikers are usually lightning, etc), but this is mostly for background and your dragon does not usually need to adhere to these rules unless otherwise stated.
What rank will my dragon be once they are accepted?
If the dragon is a hatchling at the time of registration, they will be placed in the rank of Irukandji. They will remain there until the 1st of each month, when a week-long event called the Thresher Trials will take place. At the end of the Trial, all Irukandji who participated will be promoted depending on their actions in the Trial. Most will go to Scourge or Sea Scourge, but a few will be placed in Aquacendium. The dragon wh struck the killing blow to the shark will be promoted to the rank of Thresher. Each dragon goes through the Thresher Trial only once.
If the dragon is an adult at the time of registration, they will instead be placed in the rank of Scourge (or Sea Scourge, if the dragon is of the Water flight, or is equipped with flatfins or deep sea bulbs). You may also ask for the dragon to be placed in Irukandji, if you would like the dragon to participate in a Thresher Trial.
How can I get promoted?
Promotions may be acquired in many ways. The easiest way is to win a writing competition, which will occur at the same time as the Thresher Trial. Other promotions may be available by participating in events. Irukandji and dragons currently participating in the Thresher Trials may not participate in the monthly writing competition.
Winning one of the monthly wiring competitions will promote you one step up the rankings. Alternatively, you may choose to remain in your current rank, but move up within that group. For example, a dragon currently in the rank of Sea Scourge can choose to move up one full step to Aquacendium, or remain a more powerful Sea Scourge.
Remember, your dragons are the ones claiming the hierarchy, not you, the users! You can have multiple dragons in different ranks, but we as users are just one group of people who write lore and play games :)
What benefits are there for...
Registering?
Registering as an official Ocean’s Bane lets you participate in neat activities, including raffles, CYOA, contests, and more. Prizes can sometimes be won during such activities, including items, promotions, and bragging rights. Getting Promoted?
Aside from the bragging rights, higher rankings can make you eligible for exclusive events. Captains who obtain a ship during an event gain command over that ship, letting them host smaller events (with permission). High Captains gain ownership of the entire Ocean’s Bane, which most likely won’t happen unless I leave FR or otherwise decide to pass it on. Additionally, during the promotion you may receive an item or two, depending on the rank being promoted.
What determines who killed the thresher in the Thresher Trial?
See the official Thresher Trial thread here, but put simply, the person who wrote the most or had particularly good ideas and role playing during the Trial will be allowed to strike the killing blow. You may attack the shark but not kill it if you have not received permission.

Applying
Before your apply, be sure that a registration window is open! This will be indicated in the first post. Most often registration will be open, and the only time it will be closed is during a Thresher Trial.
Next, choose up to three dragons you would like to register. Ping me here with the following form attached:
Dragons registering:
A little bit about each dragon:
Does the dragon(s) have Ocean’s Bane related lore?
Keep in mind that all dragons registered must have a little bit of Ocean’s Bane-related lore. It doesn’t have to be grand or complex, but at the same time, please put effort into your lore! It’s more fun for everyone that way :)
