Withdrawn but keen-eyed and with a wit as sharp as his tongue, Noctis is the second son of the clan's matriarch and her guardian. For the first year of his life, he was content to pursue a fledgling interest in the arcane that would else have been usurped by the necessity of heirship, punctuated by airy conversations with his elder brother about the principles of leadership impressed upon him by Lachesis' latest lesson.

Then, Vito was called to the Plaguebringer's service.

Thrust suddenly into a responsibility he never wanted, the hatchling who had once been a little spot of light among the realities of the Contagion grew embittered. The million ideas he had once had for pursuits toward a mastery of the magical curdled into the simple knowledge that he could never be that dragon. He insists now that he never cared about anything beyond the concrete world around him.

His mother's silence weighs heavily on his mind, slowly becoming a wedge driven between them. If she cared so much about his future, why was she not the one instructing him in how best to make his way in the world? He puts in only the barest of efforts in his tutoring sessions and all but doesn't speak to any of the other dragons, not even his father or Hypatia when they attempt to offer sympathetic words. On some nights, however, one might find him trailing along the edges of the Tangled Wood, speaking to someone with eyes full of magic.
