Biography
Hellebore The Retainer |
Eventually, you leave Eretham and Themis’ island, the platform floating high above it having caught your eye. As you alight, you immediately notice it is large and covered in magnificent trees stretching upward, their branches weaving together to form a thick canopy. You peer up, looking for the inhabitant of the island, but only spy what looks like a beautifully woven hammock strung between the trees. It seems impossibly large and woven with care, black and ivory thread making up some fantastical story. Before you have a chance to really explore the island, you hear a pointed huff and whirl around to find a large Imperial, cloaked in rich amber fabric and gripping a frankly terrifyingly large trident. She pauses, looking you up and down slowly, her eyes barely visible behind a vicious looking headdress.
“Is it not polite to call out before entering a dragon’s lair? Don’t answer that. I am Hellebore, a retainer and guard to Prince Eretham. Ask now if there is something you need, I’m afraid I don’t have time for social calls.” |

Origins
|
|
Born into the Viridian Labyrinth, Hellebore inherited a role in the ongoing war between the children of the Gladekeeper and the Plaguebringer. It was not something she coveted as her ancestors sometimes did, but as a hatchling she saw it as her duty. She was trained to be a warrior for the Nature flight from birth, defending their lush lands from the disease that the plagulings fought to spread throughout the land. For some time, Hellebore was convinced that their cause was the just one--that the Plague flight was the one to blame for this war. She continued to fight for her family, clinging to this belief like it was a lifeline, until she could cling no more.
It was a particularly difficult mission that pushed Hellebore away from her family’s beliefs, one that tore her heart in two as it opened her eyes to senselessness. battle. Though she never speaks of it, that mission was when she lost a dear friend and ally, forcing her to confront her purpose in this war. Eventually she came to a realization that set her free from the chains of her heritage: this war was not hers. It never had been in the first place, she had simply inherited it by way of her blood. This constant battle between Nature and Plague had been going on for centuries, leaving both sides confused as to why it began in the first place. It became clear to her that neither side was right nor wrong, just battle hungry. With that in mind, Hellebore declared her standing and left the lands she grew up in, uncertain of where she would go; all she knew is, should her skills be required again, they would be for a just cause and not a senseless war. |
She set out across the land, lodging with other warriors and mercenaries, allowing herself time to consider what she wanted to do while honing her skills in battle. Finally, she discovered the Galestorm Flyers after delivering a young hatchling to their lands, and quickly learned of the existence of the Dark Queen; the mage had attempted to escape yet again, only to be foiled by the Flyers. Hellebore lent her claws to this struggle, assisting the mages and warriors in pressing the Shade-Touched Ridgeback back into her stone tomb, sealing her away once more. Nantis and Elspeth were impressed with her commanding nature and skills in battle, soon offering the Imperial a place as the royal retainer to Eretham, where she would defend the young Mirror from danger and assist him in his duties.
She took her duties seriously, following Eretham around and defending the hot headed prince to the best of her abilities, though she maintained her neutral stance on war and fighting. This was her routine while the Galestorm Flyers lived in the Shifting Expanse, and when it came time for the clan to move to the Windswept Plateau, it became her routine there as well. She continued to follow Eretham around, though has gotten much busier with the prince leaving the lair more often to participate in hunts alongside his mother. She has enjoyed the free time she gets now, often spending time among the trees she has filled her island with, a small slice of home that does not carry the blood soaked roots she so despises. She has even begun to consider training some of the other Flyers to properly defend themselves, though she is not certain of it yet. |

Hellebore has always been a dragon that put great importance on morals and honor, but as earned traits rather than traits by blood. In her earlier days, she felt that the duty of ancestors should be the duty of their heirs, but over time she grew out of such beliefs. Now, she finds that a sense of duty and purpose is not something that can be passed down bloodlines or through a feud as old as time, but rather should be discovered for one's self. In regards to other dragons, she believes that each should be judged for what they do, not what flight they hail from, the breed they are, or their status in the world. As such, she has cast aside the judgement of the Imperial dragon breed on Pearlcatchers, and abandoned the feud between Nature and Plague flights. These beliefs lend Hellebore the calm, cautious, and thoughtful personality that allows her to be an effective retainer, though they are a double-edged sword. Oftentimes, she struggles to figure out if a dragon should be trusted--particularly strangers--and will often choose to not trust if she is at all unsure, leading to damaged relationships.
