Earthdiver

The Memorialist
"I can show you the best parts of the world in this pawful of crystals."

Earthdiver's parents were Earthen purists, eschewing magic, technology and worldly possessions. Her old home was a bare rock cave with beds of sand (softer than you'd think) overlooking the Shattered Plains, set in the mountains raised beside the Pillar of the World. But Earthdiver knew, ever since shaping and polishing her first quartz, that Earth magic was her calling. When she told her parents, she was met with disappointment. While they were okay with her practicing magic, they didn't want her near the lair when she did so, a response that nearly broke her heart. As soon as she thought she was ready, she left her family lair, never to return.

The wider world of Sornieth was more than she expected, however. The tall buildings, electric lights, and glittering treasure proved overwhelming and she initially sought refuge in magic-oriented clans. As time went on and she adjusted, Earthdiver began traveling to seek training from other Earthen mages, experimenting with techniques. Her specialization however was mostly indebted to a Light scholar she met while traveling. Siderea's goal in traveling was to record sites of historic importance, as time was constantly eroding the material traces. The stories she told inspired Earthdiver to seek out these magnificent sites and she was awed by grandeur that even rot and erosion could not stall. She decided to preserve these monuments in a more tangible way; crystal models and, in a move inspired and assisted by Siderea, crystals with deliberate imperfections that could create an holographic image when laser light shone through. Ultimately this led her to the Ashfall Wastes, the source of most raw material for Earth magic and place for her to create and shape the crystals she needed.

In the fire and smoke of the Blacksand Annex, she met Terren. As a prospector, he was one of the first drakes she befriended in Fire lands, in addition to being her connection for raw materials. He showed her his favorite marvels, massive pits of blue flame, monstrous caverns carved by cooling lava and the geyser fields that feed into the Sea of a Thousand Currents. They became mates while Earthdiver threw herself into her new passion. On the fiery plains, she also met Idol, a similarly aged Imperial finishing his training as a Landshaper. He showed her all the great volcanos in Ashfall, though they disagreed on what makes a volcano great; Idol preferred the flashy eruptors, while Earthdiver liked the slow, hot lava of shield volcanoes. They became friendly rivals, often teasing and arguing over geologic formations.

Slowly, the land of Fire ran out of intriguing places for her to memorialize. When she raised the idea of moving to Terren, he adamantly refused. How could he make a living as a prospector outside of the Wastes?
....She is not proud to say there were a few fights over this, though they split without grudges on either side. With a large satchel of crystals and a decent purse from the sale of a few pieces, Earthdiver set out again to wander the world. Eventually she journeyed into the Sunbeam Ruins, in part to immortalize the Beacon and other structures, but also to see if she could find Siderea.

Ironically, it's Idol she finds first while buying lunch for herself at the Beacon. Over tetras and shrimp, she showcases her collection and he recounts his work for the Beacon and the clan he's staying with in the Hewn City. Surely they have room for one more, especially if she's a friend.
Her first impression of Clan Mediasolis is that they are much more militant than she expected. But the patriarch vouches that having more arts in the clan would be good and the matriarch at least seems tolerant. All in all, not the worst place she's been, especially with friends around.
