"To see clearly is poetry, prophecy, and religion all in one."
Darkness. That was all Rasul saw when he first opened his eyes. Well, that wasn’t necessarily true. It wasn’t absolute darkness. The darkness of a cave, with only the outlines of older dragons barely visible to him. The newborn hatchling was confused, sure. But he wasn’t scared. Something deep inside him trusted these dragons. The dragons who whispered about things he didn’t understand while studying him. He doesn’t remember any of the things they said, or what any of them looked like. All he remembers is a bright, burning light being pressed into his eyes. And from that moment on, he was unable to see. Then, the other dragons spoke more clearly, and directly to him. They told him of his destiny as the Oracle of Lightweaver. She would be his eyes, and whisper visions to him in his dreams. And he was to obey. He grew up near the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, with various other Light dragons caring for him and teaching him. The other dragons helped him better understand and interpret the dreams that Lightweaver sent him. The strange whispers and recurring dreams made him feel confused and frustrated. The whispers She breathed into his ears where incoherent and unrecognizable. He couldn’t seem to piece together what She wanted him to do. He spent hours every day scrawling the bits and pieces of the dreams She sent, trying to figure it all out. Despite the frustrating parts of the job, Rasul refused to lose hope. He was determined to fulfill his destiny. He would pray to the Lightweaver every day, and consult his teachers whenever She would answer. And then, one night, a brilliant red light broke through his dreams. And a voice whispered: “They are coming. Full of fear and grief. You must show them hope. Be their light.” And when Rasul awoke, he knew. |

The next morning, Rasul set off at once. Guided by the whispers and strands of light, he made his way toward The Shifting Expanse, and he waited. It felt like hours had passed before they finally arrived. Amaia, Marhena, Zeno, Nilam, Stav, and Hotaru. He was thrilled to meet them, but pained to hear about the tragic past they shared and all the hardships they endured on their journey. Rasul assured the group that they were safe, and although for some of the dragons it took some convincing, he managed to calm their nerves. The oracle explained the visions he had received, and that the Sunbeam Ruins were meant to be their new home. Rasul was happy to work alongside the group of dragons and build their own clan. And he settled into his place as oracle for the clan. Since Marhena isn’t a Light dragon, she comes to Rasul often and relies on him to convey the words of Lightweaver. Rasul tends to be rather quiet and distant, easily distracted by the things he hears and feels from Lightweaver. He spends almost all his time scribing his dreams and prophecies. Despite his lack of sight, he can read the streams of sunlight that dapple their clan home and foresee the past, present, and future. He speaks rather strangely, as elegantly as a poet but in a mystical, sometimes difficult to understand way. As though everything he speaks is a prophecy of its own. Because of this, while everyone in the clan respects him, it's difficult for other dragons form a close bond with him. Sometimes, it’s rather easy to forget Rasul is blind. He moves around and writes just as well as any other dragon, but the one thing he has difficulty doing is reading. He can read engraved tablets, using his claws to trace the engravings, but anything written on parchment is impossible. As such, he greatly enjoys having these things read to him. Amaia’s voice, he finds, is especially enjoyable and he visits her often to hear the new things she has written or the new books she has found. He enjoys listening to Hotaru’s singing and performances as well. Despite his sometimes difficult to understand nature, he has bonded with a few dragons in the clan. Marhena often comes to him for advice and he shares his prophecies with the queen whenever he comes upon something important. He also enjoys talking to Amaia and sharing the things that they've both read and seen. He gets along well with Zeno, Nilam, Stav, and Hotaru as well, as he feels a close connection with the group who he helped when they came to the Sunbeam Ruins. Rasul’s partner is Joan. Rasul never really saw himself falling in love, or having a future with any dragon, but Joan proved him wrong. Being the one dragon in the clan that could not admire her work, Rasul tended to keep away from her when she first joined the clan in order to avoid accidentally offending her. But Joan was drawn to him anyway. She enjoyed the way he spoke, comparing him to a poet, and insisted on spending a bit of time with him to listen to what he had to say about the visions he had. The two formed a deep bond rather easily, and although Rasul spends more time pouring over his visions than anything else, and his job as an oracle is his priority, he does his best to spend the free moments he has with his family. He is very proud of is son, and although he doesn’t see himself as the best father in the world, he tries the best he can. |
