The peaceful dead are rare indeed. In all her time on Sornieth, Arastina has encountered so few fallen who have been ready to proceed to the next world. Most spirits are scared of what lies ahead, too afraid to let go what lies behind. Some are angry, too, clinging to injustice, anchoring themselves to the earth. The quiet dead are so few and far between.

But without the restless departed, Arastina would not know what to do with herself. It is her job, her mission to calm those unable to pass over on their own, to guide them along the winding paths that lead to better lands. This life and the next are pressed so close to one another, and she can feel the thin veil between, always draped over her shoulders, heavier than a thousand lifetimes of her own. The veil whispers in her ear, sings her to sleep with the responsibilities it confers, assures her that there will always be work tomorrow.

And there is. Every day, Arastina rises. She fills her lantern with oil and hums a soft little song she learned long ago from sources unknown. She seeks the dead, following their anguish for miles and miles if she must, and she kneels at their side, offering her hand. Then, she crosses over. She brings them home.
