ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
▾ Grim is not a living thing, but a built thing. Centuries of existence have imbued him with a deep self-awareness and life-like consciousness, but he lacks the fundamental autonomy possessed by organic dragons. It was once believe that if an animal -or sometimes a person, usually one condemned to death- were buried alive in the foundations when a church or sacred site was being constructed, their spirit would be bound to that place and would protect it from evil.
▾ Grim's creator certainly believed this tale, and used it as inspiration for the construction of his own personal bodyguard. Bloodstone is a powerful sorcerer, and one who has made many enemies over the course of his career. His work is what many might call 'unethical', while others prefer to call it as it is: sadistic. With all the enemies he's gathered, protection seemed wise. Grim's body was formed from a ram's skeleton, packed into shape with mud and woven into place with aquatic weeds. Kelpie's blood and various other unsavory alchemical reagents form the details of his composition, which were then animated in the same fashion as the church grims of old: with a sacrifice. The life given in exchange for Grim's awakening was that of a hatchling, ritually drowned in the same river Grim's body was pulled from. ▾ For what felt like an eternity, Grim was bound to serve the sorcerer, who lived in a foreboding and remote tower built in the center of an alpine lake. Ceaselessly, he would patrol its shores, half-submerged in the mire, waiting to rend any intruders or escapees limb from limb. Grim has committed many sins in service of his master, maimed (and worse) many who would oppose him. As he grew older and learned more about the world, he began to question the benevolence and good intentions of his creator, but was unable to voice or act on any dissenting impulse. For Bloodstone knew how un-sympathetic he was, and anticipated his creation turning against him eventually. The wily sorcerer had built a failsafe into his guardian, a tricky bit of magic that ensured that if Grim were to ever leave sight of the tower he guarded, his body would dissolve into its original components. ▾ Grim has spent many long nights contemplating this conundrum, testing just how far he could venture from the tower before his scale-like skin would start sloughing off, exposing the bloody marrow beneath. He was developing a conscience, and the screams of his master's victims, or 'experiments' as he termed them, made him ill to listen to. Was it worth ending his half-life to escape such corrupt servitude, or should he bide his time, hoping for his master's magic to fail? ▾ Eventually, fail it did. Such evil cannot continue for so long without drawing attention to itself, and there are consequences to inflicting the level of harm Bloodstone was responsible for. A group of his former apprentices, left for dead on the mountainside after they had served their master's purpose, banded together for revenge. They stripped Bloodstone of his magic and imprisoned him in his tower, turning his own defenses against them. Grim, who had sank his fangs into a few of these youths in the past, expected no mercy, and was surprised when they recognized him as being just as much Bloodstone's victim as themselves. The group wanted to free Grim, but the only loophole they could find in his contract with the sorcerer would cost him. ▾ By removing Grim's sight entirely, they could absolve him of the responsibility of keeping the tower within his field of vision at all times. He could flee this place with his body and sanity intact. This, Grim thought, was a mighty small price to pay for his liberation. As the world went dark around him, Grim felt himself come to life -true life- for the first time since his creation. He could feel, really feel the mud and pebbles between his claws, the wind in his tattered wings. He was overwhelmed by the richness of smell and taste when he flicked his tongue into the air, the sound of water and the fading footsteps of his rescuers. For a long, long time, Grim had dreamed of the narrow, steep stream that flowed from the tower's moat down the mountainside, eventually joining with the Long Rest River where his body had been harvested. He felt it calling to him, deep in the earth, and without a second thought for the prison he'd just been released from, he slithered through the muck towards the sound of running water. ▾ Downstream, in the cold, silty banks of the Long Rest, Grim found himself perfectly at home, comfortable for the first time in his surroundings. He no longer felt the compulsion to attack every living thing that wasn't his creator, but he found there was still a deep protective instinct in his bones he couldn't shake. Many travelers used the Long Rest to navigate through the mountains, and a handful of settlements had established themselves along its shores. It was to these people, who were wary at first, then curious, then welcoming of the strange new river monster on their borders, that Grim pledged his allegiance to. No longer would he harm the innocent, but guard them from the mountains' perils, his way of atoning for his past. Though he may look frightening upon first encounter, Grim is a thoughtful and earnest creature, subdued and cautious for fear of misusing his hideous strength. He loves company, loves conversation, especially when visitors to his den can describe to him the scenic sights along the river. But Grim has no patience for violence, and having served a violent master, he can recognize cruel intentions better than most. A strong warning to vagrants with bloody thoughts who pass along the shores of the Long Rest, for there is a swift, unkillable creature lurking in the reeds who will not suffer wanton wickedness near his home.
