Considering how thin the veil got at this time of year especially, she’d been seeing an uptick. Not everyone was particularly amusing to her, some certainly were pretty bad customers. Hell, she was currently burying the product of a timeline gone wrong. At least the last visitor had the wherewithal to leave her pretty but dead face intact. There was a slight vibration in the air that made the fins behind her ears shiver. Her shovel came to a halt next to her body’s shoulder. She turned to look around, ears twitching slightly. “Already?” Her shoulders slumped as she dropped her shovel. “You have pretty bad timing, stranger.” She turned around. On the ground before her was… Well, it was halfway through transforming from a snake into a humanoid form. He was also moaning something fierce. Fidel knelt down. “Hey man. Did you break all your bones on the way in?” The man-snake lifted his head. He had one of those miserable pathetic faces you couldn’t help but find endearing. He also was in possession of the world’s most well-groomed beard once properly transformed that she’s ever seen, and an aura that betrayed he was not of Sornieth. He took a shuddering breath. “I didn’t die?” A little bit of River muck fell from his mouth. “The only dead thing here is me,” Fidel responded. She picked up her dead self’s arm for emphasis, waving it around. “Boo.” “… Maybe this is just another layer of hell,” he said then, scrambling to get to his feet. His lower body was still too noodly to do so however, and he crashed back into the damp earth. “This is a fate worse than death.” “Oh, don’t be so dramatic.” Fidel grabbed the man by the back of his hair, lifting his head up again. “You’re in my realm, adjacent to the world of Sornieth. I’m not going to hurt you, unless you wreck the place or try to kill me.” She grins. “Not that that’s ever worked.” “Sor… What?” He sat up, smoothing his dark hair back. His gaze slid around, taking in his surroundings with a scrutinizing squint. “And you’re a god?” “Oh, no, there’s people that call me that but I’m not,” she hummed, reaching out to swipe a bit of dirt off the man’s face. “At least, when is something a god? When it calls itself one? Or if it’s enough other people do?” “I’m not particularly interested in debating semantics, miss…” He raised an eyebrow as he spoke in a not particularly unamused tone. If anything, he was quite charmed. “Fidel,” she said then, extending a gunk-coated hand. “Now get off the ground and tell me what your deal is, will you?” The man smiled. “Noctifer. In my realm, I’m called a demon.” … Needling a demon into doing good work isn’t generally an easy thing. Much less so for someone like Fidel, who has a hard time doing things that aren’t directly within her scope of interest. Yet, somehow her union with Noctifer worked. Initially, he had been the one to tend to a few of her gardens. Once she learned more about how he could never return home, that he had been hunted before he got here, she took to confiding in him about why she had to keep burying bodies who looked exactly like her. Noctifer didn’t have a green thumb, but he did have a knack like her for burying the dead and conducting rites. This is how the man found a new home. For where else would he go? Fidel was insufferable but she was his kind of insufferable. She in turn needed more company, because it gets lonely and the dead body of her first love is tough company. Thus, the aspiring breaker of time acquired her demon. Notes:

Youngest of the clutch
Wanted to stay in the swamp to learn about tending to final rites with her dad at first
Knew as the youngest she was likely to leave still
Didn't know how to feel until her dad caught a glimpse of another snake-shapeshifter headed from the Rotrock Rim to the Starfall Isles.
Sent her off to tail him, unaware this was a glimpse of the past
She was only there for a moment, startling the serpent before she blinked back to the present
Had no idea she'd messed with what was technically another demon
Began scouring for answers as to how she did what she did
Was soon spotted by the Archivists as a Naomi descendant
They tried to catch her, but she panicked and poof, past again
This time she caused the ancient Gaoler Gabriel to drop an ice figurine of the Icewarden before popping back, this time further from her pursuers
Things like this kept happening, with small jumpscares popping up with each leap
Only reason this didn't have the same effect as Fidel would be the simple fact that the only change was what small thing startled her victims
For example, Gabriel would've still dropped the figurine in that time, it'd just be because of a sneeze from his curly-furred companion
Finally she managed to find a walled garden at the edge of the Starfall Isles
Ran into the Garden of the Eleven, only to be startled by an ancient Imperial
Popped back really far this time, only to find the Imperial still there, staring at her
She tried to pipe up, to ask questions, but he hushed her
Quiet, she followed him to the edge of a clearing, only to spot a bustling hub of ancient drakes
She spotted a lot of her accidental victims, though they appeared a little different to her
Heard names and other whispers, realizing they were like her father
Apparently they just weren't caught in her mother's pocket like her dad was
No clue if it was the same alternate as her father, but it was at least the same situation
Dad just saw a snake shapeshifter like herself and wanted to cause a little mischief
Wanted to go say hi to them, but blinked back before she could
The Imperial, Kaurik, soon answered her questions, explaining what she saw
Explained how they attached themselves to the Eleven in a way, and even changed themselves with scrolls like the drakes often did to blend in
She guessed Kaurik was involved with their arrival somehow, but he never answered her
Now happily resides among the Archivists, pestering the ancients she can chat with by hopping through time to question them
Is seen fondly by Kaurik and Selena, but hasn't officially met Meshla in the present
Has settled for hopping back to continue her little things, and realized a handful of the ancients brought in by the three recognized her
The hunt for her was to try and find their old companion, even if they never did know her that well
Lives a bit of a double life, settling with friends in the past and poking fun about "linear time" in the present
Has taken to teaching about time, magic tied to it, and what not to do if ever caught in specific time situations
Even retrieved the missing former clan leader, Clockwork, from her own time loop and used it as a lesson on trying to out paradox a paradox (much to the confusion of Clockwork herself)
No student has managed to actually hop about the timeline like Matzayani has, but they certainly try to become experts on the technicalities tied to it
Doesn't know she technically became the reason certain entities were drawn to the others, that first glimpse of Naomi's line, that first hint of something like them but not like them
Doesn't know one of her hops actually led to the great move in the first place (and in the case of the Grand Scholars, the move back)
Doesn't know she still has a tendency to draw in other demons, including two working to free Zerah (who she talks to a lot while he's locked away; her nickname for him is Dum Dum)
Still waiting for her own time echoes to catch up on her and just drop, like her mom's do
