the girl watched silently as the glowing dot fell. Incredulously, she held out her hand, but instinctively pulled it back at the heat radiating from the star.
Yes, whatever they said, this must be a star.
What else could it be, this beautiful, glowing orb of warmth?
Sucking in her breath, she decided there and then that there was only one thing to do. She dug a hole, carrying on until her arms were coated in dirt. She delicately lifted the star, ignoring the heat, and gently placed it in the hole. She covered it again, adding sharp crystals so it would not be trampled upon.
Nobody believed her about that night, but she knew. A star had fallen from the sky that night.
Millions of years later, a small hatchling opened it's eyes. Crawling out of the hole, it blinked at the brightness of the world around it, giving a tentative squeak. It pulled out, revealing not just it's black, white and blue flank, but a small unicorn-like spirit by it's side.
The hatchling became a queen in her own way, known as Talfryn. Feared by many, but respected by all.
But for now, she was helpless. Many took her in, few kept her for over a day. So Talfryn, named by the human who had known her longest, made her own way.
She survived frozen winters and harsh, hot summers, forest fires and starvation. She swam the sea of a thousand currents, shivered at the fortress of ends. And there the gaolers told her about dreamlights. Gaolers like her, born from a fallen star.
That explained why she remembered that kid.
