There's nothing more addicting than a kept secret.

____Cotriona met every expectation anyone had of her by a young age. While her peers were just starting to establish themselves, she had already become one of the top researchers on Magical-Material Interfaces. Becoming so well known in certain, exclusive circles came with a quite a few perks, the most important of which being that she could choose to work on whatever project she wanted. And for a time, this was enough. Until she finally realized just how unfulfilling it was to only ever meet the goals other people gave her.

____This was why, when approached by the skydancer about using her very high security clearance to help her get ahold of some very sensitive reagents, she didn’t immediately turn Andraste in to be dragged off and imprisoned. She didn’t agree to it either, of course, but that skydancer was disgustingly charming. For all that she looked like a vagrant, her sharp wit and clever arguments made her far more engaging than her coworkers. Eventually, the only reason Cotriona continued resisting was so that she could continue to have those long-winded debates about the merits of larceny.

____Well, she had tried doing everything the right way, and she was miserable for it. Why not try for something new?

____Partnering with Andraste was the first of many selfish decisions, and she still considers it the best one she ever made. For a time, she was able to go to work as normal during the day, bring home her pilfered goods to Andy, and then they’d spend the evening however they so pleased. Somedays she would watch Andy tinker, others Cotriona would start a silly debate that they both would take very seriously, and often they’d go out and they try to liberate people from their valuables. Cotriona got caught of course, but it wasn’t long at all before she had developed some very deft claws and an eye for the unwary.

____There was something innately enjoyable about the outrage and panic when the disappearing items were discovered. On the surface Cotriona shared their anger, but inside she was joyfully watching others flounder in confusion. She moved from project to project, and soon she was good enough that she didn’t need clearance to get access to restricted areas.

____Her most recent project took her and the rest of her team to the coast, where an unexpected cave system had been unearthed on accident. It was an old, old place. The stones were saturated with magics foreign to dragon-kind, and the walls held signs of once being a dwelling place for some strange race of creatures.

____Of all the fantastically magical items there, the most magically saturated item was a knotwork-patterned bracer. Without an ounce of guilt, she falsified her results to make it seem magically weak and planned to spirit it away in a few days’ time. The plan would have worked perfectly if the artifact hadn’t taken a liking to one of the researchers and decided to crawl into his arm. As people started asking questions about how such a ‘weak’ artifact was able to do something so powerful, the Reclamation Bureau got called in to extract it from him.
