Caccina was born in the Observatory.

She was not born in the manner her children would later be, in a dark corner of the kitchen cellars, hiding from her god. No, all work had stalled as the scholars awaited her arrival. Even the Arcanist paused at his great telescope long enough to wave a hand and permit her life.

Her father, Yachini, was one of the head astronomers of the Observatory, a respected and tenured professor of the stars. He wanted an assistant, and petitioned to the Arcanist for a wife. Their god did not like distractions from their studies, but to raise a child with the express expectation of excellency was a curious experiment to them both.

Thus, Caccina alone survived out of a litter of four.

Her cradle was in the corner of her father's classroom - she learned to count by the theorems on the blackboards, learned to read by being allowed to fuss with rejected term papers, learned to speak by being held up to the night sky, on the roof of the Observatory. Her first word was stars.

Her experiment was a success, her father declared, as she graded papers from her first week of teaching. She had worked herself raw, at his insistence, shunning acquaintances and sleep for a few more hours of studying.

Caccina surpassed her father, and was allowed to wait upon the Arcanist.

The Eye of Many Lenses was the great telescope that their god was perpetually hunched over, all four hands urgently scrawling what he found, each in a different hand. Many scholars sat the night with him, trying to match his writ, all shouting over each other in brilliant theories and lectures. Exalted servants scurried among them all, supplying fresh paper, coffee, and candles.

The Arcanist disregarded most of them, but occasionally, he would ask Caccina to recalibrate the Eye.

It was an honored position, and a high one too, as the thousands of knobs on the telescope were too high for most to reach. Their god was twice, thrice as long as the largest dragon, but he didn't want to stoop to fidget with the dials. So that's where Caccina came in.

Fourteen hours a day, seven days a week, and she still had a class in the evenings.

The Arcanist was not concerned in the matters of ruling, and he was not concerned in the matters of dragons. They were a somewhat useful curiosity that his siblings invented, nothing more. When someone broke down from the stress, there were a dozen more to replace them, a constant clamor for his attention, so he didn't care.

Everyone in the Observatory was this callous, by nature, that's how they had gotten this far. It was an ambitious environment where trying to relate to someone on an intimate level would be unheard of, unless it was framed in a research paper.

Most who couldn't handle the lifestyle turned to drink, and that's what Caccina was trying to do, the first time she went down to the kitchens.

An exalted servant of the Arcanist said no, she may not commandeer the cooking sherry for 'research', but she better sit down anyway, since she looked ready to collapse.

This was Aydin. Caccina had never known a sweeter face, never anyone to smile so earnestly for her - and soon the long shifts recalibrating the Eye didn't seem long at all, if she had their secret rendezvous to look forward to.

There was no hope of approval from her peers, no way to frame their love as research.

Caccina owns a few dozen floating satin mice that she's been breeding to live like that for decades. What started as a half-baked cover story to explain to the Arcanist why she, an astronomer, was seen at a corpse market has turned into her inexplicably being an adapt at mouse husbrandry.

The mice are not bothered by their relationship to gravity, and seem quite comfortable swimming through the air. They are all individually exchanted at birth to be able to leviate, and can be found bobbing close to the ceiling of her bedroom. She's fond of them,
