Biography

When the forbidden portal was first discovered, a handful of either very brave or very foolish scholars reinscribed the portal, unleashing what lay within upon the lands of sorienth. Hordes of new creatures, as well as many new and unknown foes to dragon-kind, poured out of the portal. Diligent parties of warriors lept into battle against them in order to protect their clans and their homes. Several teams of scientists ALSO joined the fray to learn all about the portal and what it contained.
One such scientific excursion led to the discovery of a being with nature of some kind of apparition. The team was surprised to find that it didn’t seem to be aggressive towards them, the team’s skydancer not detecting any malice from it at all even, though it did appear to have some kinds of rudimentary thoughts. The amorphous being didn’t really seem to be truly alive though. It didn’t eat, at least, not in the traditional sense that they could tell, nor did it sleep or truly communicate. Not at first, that is.
By the team’s third encounter with the being, they realized it was beginning to take on a semi-draconic form. Its features were vague, but it was definitely becoming more consistent, more corporeal even. Through continued visits, it continued to change, seeming to have a favorite on the team as its form seemed to closely resemble a particular nocturne on the team, including the dragon’s wing injury. At this point, they gave the apparition a name, “Naysayer”, in spite of all those who’d said nothing good could come from the portal.
Naysayer continued to ‘evolve’ in a sense, and he learned of many things as they taught him. He learned of Speech, of emotions, and different bonds. About the many customs of the team and their respective breeds and clans. Because of them, though, he also learned about loss.
They say all good things come to an end, and this is unfortunately true here as well. The party of scientists that had been studying Naysayer and the portal met their end at the hands of the hordes that spilled from the portal. There was a single dragon left by the time he found them, and it was too late by the time Naysayer reached them. Filled with grief and rage, emotions he’d never felt till now, Naysayer slaughtered the creatures that had brought an end to the companions who had taught him all he knew.
Naysayer knew instinctively that the portal was responsible for his very existence, but it had been these dragons who had given him ‘life’, as ill-fitting as the word was to his state of being. He’d vowed to destroy it along with everything that came from it. From each of his fallen friends, he gathered an item or apparel of some sort, having been corporeal enough to wear things for a while now. Momentos and reminders of his resolve
From here, he would join parties, or fight solo, he didn’t care. As long he could continue to destroy that which had destroyed what he’d cared about. As his rampage against the portal continued, his name took on a new meaning. He himself became the naysayer. Contrary to the belief of the scientists he’d met after his creation, he came to the conclusion that NOTHING good could ever come from the portal, himself included. Nothing and no one. Not a single shadow of being.
