► Memories

Bonebreaker. Her name is her mantle and her being. They are one and the same, for the fight is all she knows—the razed skin and the broken claws and the ripped-through throats. Death and melancholy scented in the air is all that she knows.

Blue has made sure of it for her. Her mentor may have the colours of the sea painted upon her skin, but only because red splattered so beautifully against her pelt. Often, the cerise that coated Blue’s body was of Bonebreaker’s own blood.

Whenever Bonebreaker fell, her mentor would look at her with a smirk curled upon her maw. “Done yet, weakling?”

Bonebreaker would laugh, her claws pressed against the earth, and rise again. It didn’t matter that her body was aching from sores, it didn’t matter that she was bleeding from a dozen wounds, it didn’t matter that her rationality was screaming at her to rest. Her response was always the same.

“Never.”

That was their ritual as Bonebreaker grew up. Their cries were a clamor, to destroy, and to shriek in rage and ecstasy at victory. Killing was what Bonebreaker had learned, through all of the nights and days and nights again that she’d been brutalised by Blue. No, not brutalised. Brutality was beauty, and killing was ecstasy. Training would be a far more apt word to describe what Blue had done to her in the days bygone, and she was proud of Bonebreaker, too.

Her will, after all, was stronger than steel, and sharper than blades forged with obsidian. Bonebreaker would not break so easily. Her mentor may be the most cruel dragon of their clan, but there was a reason that Blue had chosen her.

Bonebreaker’s anger was always far too volatile in her body: it would slosh with verve, riling her to snap at the other dragons of the clan and engage in brawls when she could. Soon, Bonebreaker realised how good it felt to be drenched in sanguine. To rage was to ravage those that doubted her, to claw their cocky smirks down into frowns, to sneer at the ruin she had made of them. To glut was to feast upon the hostility of others, to watch as they’d struggled for breath, to kill with glee satiating her body as they died a pitiful demise. To kill was to joy— and to joy, that was what was most important to her. Death is gorgeously red, and the death of her victims do well to satiate her fighting rage.

In the end, Bonebreaker turned to rivals to contain her fighting spirit. That was better than terrorising the other dragons in her clan, and fighting for her clan’s name was another joy that Bonebreaker found on its own. All of the world sees them as lesser—as phantoms, as memories, as apparitions of being—but she knows that they are worthy! She will prove to the world that they are neither broken nor ghosts, so long as Bonebreaker fights for them

Death to the Beastclans, who try to ravage them apart. Death to the wanderers, who try to steal their dragonlings. Death became her command, and soon, her clan recognised that in her too.

She was not always called Bonebreaker, but they had enshrined her with it as payment: for the scars that danced across her hide from Blue’s claws, for the blood that had flowed from her flesh from her fights. It was a mantle that adorned her: her name is her occupation and her being, and she is so glad that is all she knows.

Some in her clan are weak. Weak in mind. Weak in spirit. Even though she knows that they had not wanted to turn out that way. She helps bring them all up: all the new fighters will go through her, and she will do them the service that Blue did to her. She’ll forge them, she’ll make them, she’ll break them: and with that will come glory, with that will come fervour, with that will come anything and everything that they ever wanted.

Even if all the world turns into nothing, Bonebreaker will give her fighters a fighting spirit. They’ll fight on, until the end of time comes, until all is ruin and all is dead. They will be ghosts and apparitions: but that is a beauty in itself. They will become death personified.
