Biography
The Old Friend
The wildclaw quietly ducked out from under the rocky outcropping marking the lesser entrance to his new lair. He moved silently through the trees, following a faint path that appeared mostly undisturbed. A little ways down the trees thinned out, giving way to a clearing bathed in moonlight. Stepping into the pale glow the dragon flexed his wings, soaking in the soft illumination. Breathing in the scents of the cool evening air, he let it out with a whoosh. Then he began his call to the moon. His song echoed gently off the trees, doubling up and building upon itself. The sound was indescribable, embodying a well of emotion too complex to decipher.
A shift in the wind brought with it a fragrance he knew very well. He finished his song and turned to the newcomer, "How long have you been standing there?"
The woman stepped into the clearing, a small smile gracing her face. "Oh, I'd say since the second verse at least," she shrugged and continued. "You never could resist singing to a full moon, I see that hasn't changed."
The wildclaw let his gaze travel up and down his companion, his tone contemplative, "I cannot say the same for you." He paced a slow circle around the woman. "It seems like only yesterday you were just a shy young pup cautiously observing the world around her. Curious about what was out there, yet concerned with what she may find; content to sit on the sidelines until she believed she had the game figured out." The wildclaw's voice was warm with affection. His eyes glowed as if a gentle flame flickered and danced within them.
A hearty chuckle burst from the woman as she took a seat on the cool ground. "You sound like an old man reminiscing about the good ol' days." Her laughter rang out in the night, and he felt a smile tug at his jaws in response. She patted the spot beside her in silent invitation. Obliging, he tucked his butterfly wings against his back and rested on his haunches. Careful not to snag anything with his talons, he loosely wrapped his tail about himself. Once settled, he refocused his attention on his companion.
This time she gave him the once over, her eyes scanning from dark snout to spotted tail feathers and back. "But now it would appear you are the young pup, raring to flex his muscles and eager to explore this new territory," her tone was serious, but her smile gave her away. She slowly shook her head in mock reproach. "Such an old soul for such a young heart." Then her smile faded. Sobering, she turned to him and snared his orange gaze with inquiry burning in her own. The moonlight seemed to dance in her hair and across her skin as she spoke. "I still can't believe you found your way here."
Her voice was little more than a whisper, yet the words seemed to linger before him in the crisp night air. How are you here? The unspoken question. A single shiver ran down his spine and he gave himself a little shake. Gazing up at the moon hanging low in the sky, he took his time with his response. A small stream of smoke drifted from his nostrils as he gathered his thoughts. Finally he spoke,"It would seem fate has linked us in more ways than one." His tone was cryptic, his expression unreadable. It felt as though he had more to say, but only silence stretched between them. Then, with a small sigh he returned his stare to her. A sheepish grin broke out across his face. "Alas, I am not looking forward to puberty this time around."
