Personality
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯The last time that this Pearlcatcher spoke against his better judgement, his voice was lost to the roaring wind, just as hoarse and unruly as the windstorms that rack the Reedcleft Ascent. It was just as well, he reasoned. One finds very little to speak of or to when they exist solely on the boundaries of society. Instead of the sensations of your throat found in idle talk and gossip, then, you turn to more outer sensations - the feel of leaves against your scales, or how grass gets tangled within your claws. He is a tactile derg with little to say but much to do. He roams the Ascent alongside his Rot Deer in search of three things - creatures in need of help, lost dergs and their souls, and a mysterious Skydancer, who always seems to be just out of his reach. Call him benevolent, or unnerving, or simply strange if you will - he doesn’t seem to mind much either way. He’ll push you in the right direction if you’re lost, offer you a meal or two, or give you a place to stay for the night - all without opening his mouth. Some say he is still searching for his true name, but colliqually, he is known as the Windwanderer. ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
A Day in the Life
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯He stalked the edge of the wood, rolling his pearl underneath the palm of his claws as he went. He had pinned himself as somewhere within the higher-middle layers of the Ascent, though the wind proved too peturbed to allow him the opportunity to check. A shiver ran through the air he was cultivating between himself and the deer as a spine of wind dragged its claws down his cloak. Bowing his head down, partially to avoid the onslaught, he consulted the pearl once again. It continued to claim that their course was correct: an insistence that made him frown. The deep magics that ran through the veins of the Plateau occasionally sent the orb’s readings askew. Carefully as he had re-crafted his species’ namesake, finding little use in maintaining memories but much in the untapped magic it contained, he found that it was still prone to errors - especially in situations of dire need. He turned to the wood ear deer, which had too lowered its head to the ground, but in exhaustion. This current course wasn’t working. In fact, the deer looked worse than before. Curse it all! The closer they approached her, the worse matters became. Perhaps this was her curse, perhaps it was bad luck on their part, but summed together, it made for the perfect storm - in this case, quite literally. Last time, it had been a particularly bad fall from a cliff that fractured his wing. Another time brought an unnaturally powerful sleep over him, until he could approach her no closer without drooping his eyes and falling to the earth. Now, it was the storm, violent even by the plateau’s standards. All sorts of maladies slowed his approach to her, and worse, each one took a significant toll on his companion. He wasn’t normally one to interfere in nature’s means. When it came time for an animal to pass on, he went as far as to make their journey more comfortable. Life wasn’t to be extended, in his eyes - it was to be lived, concluded, and with any amount of luck, started from a new page in the second world. Yet this deer’s conclusion was short of normal. It was caused. Dragons were getting too daring with their supposed mastery of magic. From attempting to bend the weather to their whims, to tapping directly into streams of magic meant to sustain the world around them, never themselves, shifts were starting to occur in the natural world, slowly but surely. Docile beasts went rogue, attacking dragons they would have normally avoided and enacting violence within their own colonies in a way that uncomfortably reminded him of the way dergs waged wars. Sicknesses spread, compounded on top of one another, spread again. Life cycles of forest creatures lengthened and shortened at rates unobserved from him previously - enter the wood ear deer. It was far too young for the progression of rot that overtook its body within a matter of a week. It had first come to him with a splintered calf, as many deers of the Ascent did after a particularly taxing escape from a predator. He had figured that within a week or so of healing, it would be on its way. The spores began to emerge soon after, far too pustule and painful in nature to be the beginnings of an onset of age. It was common knowledge that a wood ear deer that had managed for some time to avoid the maws of death would be rewarded with a second life within the rot, a biologically programmed means that enhanced the strength and defense of the deer - before completely taking it over, ultimately reducing it to the wood from whence they came. As far as a means of death, it wasn’t a horrific way to go. It slowed down the deer until they simply could not move further. These spores that plagued his companion, upon careful inspection, were visually similar in shape and structure to the natural spores that were a sign of age - yet the rate at which they grew, the pain they caused him, none of it was the way it was supposed to be. Nature rarely followed a set path, but there was a rhythm to things that the state of his companion’s condition contested. Far be it from him to go against nature, but this wasn’t nature. It was the doing of careless dergs. Bringing him to the present. He knew of a skydancer who dwelled within the same reaches as him, always out of his reach, always within the corner of his eye until he turned to meet her. Wild magics emitted from her very core, changing the very nature of the world around her to extremes. It was almost as if she were the embodiment of all of dragonkind’s rapidly enforced changes on their natural world. Was she cause or the cure to his companion’s phlight? Perhaps both? He wouldn’t know until he approached her - and thus his dilemma. His attempts to do so thus far were largely unsuccessful. Still, he was never one for giving up. Collecting what strength he could, he hoisted the deer upwards off the ground, nodded, and continued to push forward. This was one eye of the storm he was determined to see. |

Current
His roles have changed very little over time, save now making a more active effort to cure his companion - or, at the very least, lessen its pain.

╰━━━━━━━━━╯- Considering his lack of formal training, he is an incredible cook. - He actively hunts and forages, only taking what he absolutely needs. ╭━━━━━━━━━╮ |

╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
Outlook
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯While he believes dergs should “take advantage” of nature in the sense that it is a fantastic natural resource that will take care of those who know how to use her, exploitation, overuse, and general disrespect of the land are unacceptable to him. ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
A previous life?
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯Unbeknownst to most, if not all, this Pearlcatcher once enjoyed a previous life within the safety and riches of an exotic family, yet had a sudden change of heart due to unknown reasons and left it all behind for the Ascent...perhaps he reached this decision through spiritualism, perhaps he simply thought it was the right thing to do, but one thing is for certain - he’ll never tell you the answer. |

Trivia
╰━━━━━━━━━╯- In his time in the Ascent, he has suffered multiple injuries due to his constant exposure to the elements, yet mysteriously, they all heal relatively quickly... ╭━━━━━━━━━╮ |

NOTES
First Draft Base Concept:
A wanderer. Attuned with nature, not haughty or prideful but quiet, reserved, thoughtful, confident, usually solitary. Would rather keep the peace than resort to violence, but not cowardly. Seeks out natural places and has a criteria to select likeminded dragons to share conversations with when actively looking for companionship. Follows an entirely different path than the standard stereotype of Pearlcatchers, and avoids those who do fit it. Deals with similarly natural materials and herbs. Restores the balance of life when and where possible. Finds solace and awe in the spirits of nature. Seeks to find a way to help ease the pain of the the wood ear deer that's become a companion
